    Abstract: A surfactant composition which contains an anionic surfactant, has a good handleability even in the case of a high surfactant content, is easy to handle at room temperature, and has a low viscosity. The composition comprises (a) a nonionic surfactant represented by the general formula (1) and (b) an anionic surfactant in a weight ratio of (99:1) to (10:90): RO-(EO)x-(PO)y-(EO)x'-H, wherein R represents an alkyl group having 8 to 20 carbon atoms; EO represents an oxyethylene group; PO represents an oxypropylene group; x and x' are each a number of 1 or more; and y is a number of more than 0 and less than the sum of x and x', provided that (EO)x, (PO)y, and (EO)x' are bonded in a block form in that order.

    Abstract: A surfactant for emulsion polymerization which is satisfactory in polymer emulsion stability during polymerization and gives a polymer emulsion which gives a polymer film having satisfactory material properties. The surfactant gives a polymer emulsion which is satisfactory in mechanical stability and chemical stability and which gives a polymer film having satisfactory water resistance. The surfactant comprises at least one member selected among unsaturated compounds which have a pentenyl group having an alkylene oxide added and are represented by the formulae (I), (II), and (VI). Also provided is a process for producing a polymer emulsion which comprises conducting emulsion polymerization with this surfactant composition. (I) (II) [In the formulae, A represents C3-18 alkylene or alkoxymethylethylene (the alkoxy group has 4 to 18 carbon atoms); EO represents oxyethylene; a is a number of 0 to 50 and b is a number of 0 to 200, provided that not both of a and b are 0; and M represents a cation.] (VI) [In the formula (VI), A'O represents C3-18 oxyalkylene; E'O represents oxyethylene; m is a number of 0 to 50; n is a number of 5 to 200; and the m -(A'O)- groups may be the same or different.]

    Abstract: A surfactant composition which, even when a surfactant is incorporated in a relatively high concentration, exhibits a high capability of wetting, a high penetrability into, and a high detergency against an object to be washed. The composition comprises the following compound (1) RO-(EO)x-(PO)y(EO)x'-H, having an average molecular weight of not more than 1200 and water, and the amount of the compound (1) based on the total amount of water and the compound (1) is 5 to less than 50 % by weight. In said compound (1), R represents an alkyl group having 12 to 15 carbon atoms; EO represents an oxyethylene group; PO represents an oxypropylene group; x and x' are each a number of 1 or more; and y is a number of 0.5 to 6, provided that (EO)x, (PO)y, and (EO)x' are bonded in a block form in that order.
