Abstract: To mitigate the adverse affects of the load imbalance phenomenon prevalent in spread spectrum, multi-carrier wireless communication systems, the system beneficially employs the use of handoff as a means for balancing the call traffic (commonly referred to as "load") among a plurality of carriers within the communication system. The multi-carrier wireless communication system monitors a plurality of metrics corresponding to the loading of each of the plurality of carriers in the communication system and, based upon the metrics, will handoff call traffic to and between the plurality of carriers, thereby mitigating the adverse effects associated with the load imbalance, in accordance with the invention.

Abstract: Orthogonal transmit diversity is implemented by employing a data splitter(803) to subdivide channel information (801) into at least a first portion of bits (802) and a second portion of bits (804). Each portion is spread with its own Walsh code for eventual transmission to a mobile station via a predetermined carrier frequency. When the number of bits in the first and second portion (802, 804) are small, separate Walsh codes are used to maintain orthogonality. When the number of bits in the first and second portion (802, 804) are relatively large, a time-division multiplex transmission is used to maintain orthogonality. A controller (809) controls the subdivision of the channel information and also an interleaver (308) to further enhance the effects of the diversity transmission. Control information related to the subdivision is transmitted to the mobile station so the channel information can be accurately reconstructed prior to decoding.

Abstract: In a TDMA cellular network, there is provided a mechanism for shared-carrier fre quency-hopping. It comprises: allocating on a frame basis within a reuse diameter to one coverage area (A-I) during certa in timeslot(s) at least one from a pool of TDM frame-hopped carriers and allocating on a frame basis within that carrier re use diameter to another coverage area (A-I) during certain other, substantially non-overlapping timeslot(s) that frame-hoppe d carrier, all in substantially non-interfering time-synchronism with any proximal reuse of that carrier, whereby the advantages of frequency hopping are obtained. Stated differently, it comprises: at one instant in time, allocating within a reuse dia meter to one coverage area (A-I) at least one of a plurality of hopped carriers and at that same instant in time, allocating within that carr ier reuse diameter to another coverage area (A-I) another of that plurality of hopped carriers, all in time-synchronism with any p roximal reuse of that carrier. The control and access carriers may also be included in the hopping pool, causing certain timesl ots to be hopped on a sequence different from the others. The pool of hopped carriers is further apportioned among co-located site s into hopping groups, thereby reducing intra-system synchronization requirements. To solve the near/far problem, TDM ti meslots bordering hopping boundaries are preferentially allocated to less distant mobile users.

Abstract: A method improves the decoding rate and reliability of adjacent cell base stations by expediting the decode process if the signal quality of a traffic channel is within a predetermined range. In particular, adjacent control channels are monitored and decoded at a rapid rate by ignoring the speech traffic channel information. The speech is interrupted (526) and the channel information is decoded (526) when, for example, the bit error rate or frame error rate of the traffic channel (TCH) is deteriorating while another channel has a better signal. The scheduling of speech channel interruptions (522) may also occur when insufficient neighbor cell information is available at the beginning of a call or immediately after handover. The lost speech signal could be recovered (536) using conventional speech extrapolation techniques.

Abstract: A method of reducing interference within a cellular system (10) by partitioning a designated frequency spectrum within a service coverage area (01, 02, or 03) into a first and at least second spectrum inclusive of the designated frequency spectrum, each with an associated power level, and offsetting the spectrums for each TDM frame under the control of an offset number unique to each TDM frame. Assignment of communication units to a spectrum and power level are based upon distance from the base site (as determined through signal strength measurements). The spectral content of spectrums in adjacent service coverage areas is adjusted to include non-coincidental frequencies.
