Abstract: An acknowledge back (ack-back) pager is provide for use in a paging system which includes a central station which transmits a group of message signals to a group of ack-back pagers which are addressed as a group. The users of the group of addressed ack-back pagers indicate a response to their respective pagers thus providing ack-back data. The pagers in the group of addressed ack-back pagers then simultaneously transmit back to the central station their ack-back data on different frequency sub-bands, a different frequency sub-band being allocated to each of the pagers in the group. The invention provides apparatus for controlling the frequency of the selected sub-band with very high accuracy.

Abstract: A method and apparatus in a data communication receiver (100) for diversity reception of a radio signal including a predictably repetitive, predetermined data bit pattern (304) comprises a processor (114) controlling (600) an antenna switch (106) to select between a first antenna feed (102) and a second antenna feed (104) as a momentary source of the radio signal during transmissions of the predetermined data bit pattern (304). The radio signal received from the momentary source is monitored by a data receiver (110) during the transmission of the predetermined bit pattern (304) to derive the data therefrom, and at least one bit error count is determined (604, 610) by the processor (114). After completion of the predetermined bit pattern (304), an antenna feed (102, 104) for the radio signal is selected (616, 620) in response to the at least one bit error count.

Abstract: An acknowledge back (ack-back) pager is provided for use in a paging system including a central station which transmits a group of message signals to a group of ack-back pagers which are addressed as a group. To accurately control the ack-back transmit frequency, the pager receives and down-converts the FRX signal thus producing a down-converted FC signal, the frequency of which is measured and stored. The pager selects which sub-band of a plurality of frequency sub-bands within a predetermined range of frequencies is to be used for transmission of the ack-back signal. The pager determines a frequency offset FD corresponding to the selected sub-band, such offset being with respect to a predetermined frequency within such range of frequencies. The pager generates an acknowledge back signal at a frequency (FC+FD)-FCTX and up-converts such signal to a transmit frequency FTX corresponding to said selected sub-band, FCTX being the frequency of a down-converted sample of the FTX signal.

Abstract: An acknowledge back (ack-back) pager is provided for receiving paging signals from a central paging station. The central paging station transmits a group of message signals to a group of ack-back pagers which are addressed as a group. The users of the group of addressed ack-back pagers indicate a response to their respective pagers thus providing ack-back data. The pagers in the group of addressed ack-back pagers then simultaneously transmit back to the central station their ack-back data on different frequency sub-bands, a different frequency sub-band being dynamically allocated to each of the pagers in the group. Each ack-back pager determines whether the paging signals received thereby exhibits a signal level less than a predetermined threshold level. If the paging signals received by a particular ack-back pager exhibit a signal level less than such predetermined threshold level, then the pager transmits back to the central station at a first output power level. Otherwise, the pager transmits at a second ouput power level substantially less than the first output power level. In this manner, the problem of the ack-back signal from a particular pager being so strong at the central station as to mask other simultaneous ack-back signals is substantially ameliorated.
