Abstract: Methods and apparatus for out of service processing with varied behaviors. In an aspect, a method is provided for service acquisition. The method includes determining one or more conditions, wherein each condition is associated with at least one weight, detecting whether an out-of-service event has occurred, and if an out-of-service event is detected: identifying selected conditions and associated weights, and processing the associated weights to determine service acquisition “on” and “off” times. In an aspect, an apparatus includes condition logic configured to determine one or more conditions, wherein each condition is associated with at least one weight, and processing logic configured to detect whether an out-of-service event has occurred, and if an out-of-service event is detected, to identify selected conditions and associated weights, and process the associated weights to determine service acquisition “on” and “off” times.

Abstract: A quick paging channel (QPCH) is used to receive paging indicators that indicate that a wireless communication device (WCD) has a message on a paging channel relating to, for example, an incoming call to the WCD. When the condition of the quick paging channel is too low to receive paging indicators reliably, the quick paging channel is disabled to avoid false alarms, and the slotted paging channel is used to receive paging messages without monitoring the QPCH. When the QPCH signal is strong, the probability of false alarms is lower, and the quick paging channel is enabled. By using the quick paging channel to receive paging indicators only when the QPCH signal is strong, the wireless communication device can remain in a sleep state for greater periods of time as compared with the use of a slotted paging channel. As a result, standby time may be significantly improved.

Abstract: A method and communication system for assigning the plurality of fingers to demodulation paths in a path list which insures that at least one finger will be assigned to a demodulation path supporting a supplemental channel, if one exists. The method involves determining whether any of the fingers is demodulating a supplemental channel (112). When no fingers are demodulating supplemental channels, the it is determined whether the sector containing the path under consideration supports supplemental channels (114). If the sector containing the path under consideration supports supplemental channels, then the method determines the strength of the signal path relative to the weakest finger (116). If the path is a certain amount greater in strength then the weakest finger, then the method involves reassigning that finger to the path with the supplemental channel (108) and if the path with the supplemental channel is a certain amount of strength weaker than the weakest finger plus a certain value, then the method involves determining whether the weakest finger is the only one supporting the supplemental channel (118). If the weakest finger is the only one supporting supplemental channels, and the sector supports supplemental channels (120), then that finger is assigned to the demodulation path with the supplemental channel (108), thus insuring that the information on a supplemental channel is always demodulated by a finger during a soft-handoff in a high data rate call if one or more fingers are already demodulating supplemental channels, then the finger assignment algorithm will proceed in the conventional way.

Abstract: A system and method to reduce-the effects of TOA errors. A mobile unit, generates a correlation pulse when a signal transmitted from a base station is detected. The transmitted signal may be reflected or defracted such that multipath signals arrive at the mobile unit, leading to distortion in the generated correlation pulse and errors in accurate TOA measurements. The system models the response function and calculates the width of the pulse using the modeling function with a dynamically adjustable factor to indicate at what point down from the peak the pulse width will be calculated. Based on calculation of pulse width, a type of multipath signal may be determined and an appropriate correction factor applied to the measured TOA to provide a more accurate TOA determination. The system may apply correction factors to TOA signals from base stations in a mobile telephone unit or from signals received from GPS satellites.

Abstract: A terminal communicates with a first wireless network and obtains a list of cells in a second wireless network to measure. The terminal operates in a compressed mode and receives multiple transmission gap pattern sequences for different measurement purposes, e.g., RSSI measurements, BSIC identification, and BSIC re-confirmation. The terminal utilizes each transmission gap for its designated purpose or an alternate purpose. For each transmission gap, the designated purpose for the transmission gap is ascertained, and whether the transmission gap is usable for an alternate purpose is also determined based on at least one criterion. The transmission gap is used for the alternate purpose if the at least one criterion is satisfied and is used for the designated purpose otherwise. For example, a transmission gap designated for RSSI measurement may be used for BSIC identification, a transmission gap designed for BSIC identification or BSIC re-confirmation may be used for RSSI measurement, and so on.

Abstract: A system and method are disclosed by which the effects of time of arrival errors may be reduced. In a mobile unit, such as a CDMA device, a correlation pulse is generated when a transmitted code matches a stored reference code. In the absence of multipath effects, correlation pulses are generated in response to the detection of multiple transmissions of the reference code from multiple transmitters. However, multipath effects distort the generated correlation pulses leading to errors in the time of arrival measurements. The present invention calculates the width of the correlation pulses and determines a delay correction factor based on the pulse width. The delay correction factor is added to the measured delay time to provide a more accurate delay time, thus permitting more accurate location measurements based on time of arrival. In alternative embodiments, other signal factors may also be used to apply delay correction factors. The actual location determination may be performed by the mobile unit, or any other positioning determining entity (PDE). The system is also capable of applying correction factors to time of arrival signals received from global positioning system (GPS) satellites.
