Abstract: A technique is described for determining configuration options negotiated fo r a wireless communications link employing a network model. The technique receives an input data stream from a wireless communications link employing a network model, the network model operating, e.g. to isolate an PPP-Rm link from an PPP-Km link. The input data stream includes one or more framed data packets containing information. The wireless communications link employing t he network model is based on configuration options negotiated. The framed data packet(s) from the input data stream are detected and at least a portion of the information of the detected framed data packet(s) is examined when the configuration options of the wireless communications link employing the network model have been negotiated. In an embodiment, the IPCP configuration options like e.g. IP-address, Van Jacobson compression and Van Jacobson compression slot ID are determined by examining a portion of information of a predetermined number of framed data packets when the configuration options have been negociated.

Abstract: A method and a wireless communication device capable of flow controlling data to be sent from a TE2 device over a Rm interface when PPP renegotiation occurs over a Um interface. Flow control is asserted by the MT2 device by means of manipulating electrical signaling of a physical interface between the MT2 device and the TE2 device. A second embodiment provides a method and a wireless communication device for buffering data on the MT2 device when the PPP renegotiation of the Um interface occurs. In a third embodiment, data is buffered when the PPP renegotiation of the Um interface occurs. When an amount of free buffer space is less that a predetermined threshold, flow control is asserted to the TE2 device.

Abstract: A method or system (10) establishes a packet network call over a transmissio n link extending between a mobile terminal device (12) and an interworking function (18) which comprises a gateway or bridge connection to a network, such as a packet network. The transmission link connects the mobile terminal device (12) to a wireless communication device (14) over a first interface (Rm) and further connects the wireless communication device to the interworking function over a second interface via a wireless link (Um) to a base station (16). The packet network call, once established, comprises a first interface data link formed within a predetermined data link layer acro ss the first interface (Rm) and a second interface data link formed within the predetermined data link layer across the second interface. A flow control is asserted (304) and deasserted (310) on the mobile terminal device (12). Duri ng the flow control, the wireless communication device performs a linked contro l protocol negotiation with the interworking function to establish the second interface data link with the interworking function (18). After the second interface data link is established, and during the flow control, the wireles s communication device (14) performs a network control protocol negotiation wi th the interworking function to establish a second interface network link carri ed by the second interface data link.

Abstract: A system and method for invoking the performance of mobile node registration in a wireless communication network. The system comprises a terminal device for transmitting and receiving packetized data and a communication device coupled to the terminal device. The communication device monitors the packetized data for an Internet Protocol (IP) address contained in an IP address request. If the IP address request is for a static IP address the communication device waits for network movement information. Based on the received network movement information, the communication device solicits network address information. Upon receipt of the network address information , the terminal device then initiates Mobile Node registration. As a result, th e Mobile Node registration is automatically invoked whenever the terminal devi ce changes its network point-of-attachment.

Abstract: A networked device shares a single IP address with a separate networked device. The networked device examines a port number of a received IP packet. The networked device routes the IP packet to an application on the networked device if the port number of the received IP packet corresponds to the application. Otherwise, the IP packet is routed to the separate networked device. The networked device also originate s IP packets including as an origination address an IP address assigned to the separate networked device. Alternately, the IP address may be 'shifted' to between the networke d device and a separate networked device by blocking transmitted IP packets originating i n the separate networked device, and originating IP packets, which include as an origination address an IP address assigned to the separate networked device.

Abstract: In a communication system in which a roaming node seeking network access among different networks which are implemented with different network interface layer protocols, handoff schemes are instituted whereby the node may freely move from one network to another with reduced levels of interruptions with respect to the network access. Prior to and at the onset of a handoff, the node receives an indication for the handoff. The indication may be embodied in various forms such as a signal message indicating a change of the SID (System Identification), NID (Network Identification), or PZID (Packet Zone Identification). Alternatively, the indication can be in the form of information straightforwardly included in a data packet sent to the roaming node prior to the handoff. As another alternative, the indication can be implemented as distinguishable message patterns sent to the node in which different message patterns can be sent by different networks supporting different network interface layer protocols.
