Abstract: A method for providing power control with variable data rate, the method comprising: receiving a data frame having an input data rate selected from a plurality of possible input data rates; selecting an encoding rate based on the input data rate; encoding data frames to produce output symbols, repeating output symbols using first and second generating polynomials and multiplexing the repeated output symbols, selecting a puncturing format to puncture data bits and producing output data having a constant output data rate for a number of possible input data rates based on a combination of input data rates, selected encoding rate and selected puncturing format for providing said variable data rate communication link; determining a frame error rate for a number of possible input data rates; calculating differences between the frame error rates and a target error rate and adjusting the power depending on whether the difference is greater, equal or less than a predetermined threshold.

Abstract: A cellular communication system in which a system user and another user communicate with each other by way of information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted via a cell-site in which system: the system user comprises a transmitter for transmitting information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals to said cell-site, a receiver for receiving information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from said cell-site and means for measuring signal quality in said information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals received by the system user; the cell-site comprises a transmitter for transmitting information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals to said system user, a receiver for receiving information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from said system user and adjusting means for adjusting the power of information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted from the cell-site ; ; and power control means is provided for controlling the transmission power of the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals by measuring the signal power in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals received by the system user and transmitting data representing the measured power to the cell-site by way of the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals, the adjusting means being responsive to the data in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from the system user to adjust the power in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted by the cell-site.

Abstract: In a data communication system capable of variable rate transmission, high rate packet data transmission improves utilization of the forward link and decreases the transmission delay. Data transmission on the forward link is time multiplexed and the base station transmits at the highest data rate supported by the forward link at each time slot to one mobile station. The data rate is determined by the largest C/I measurement of the forward link signals as measured at the mobile station. Upon determination of a data packet received in error, the mobile station transmits a NACK message back to the base station. The NACK message results in retransmission of the data packet received in error. The data packets can be transmitted out of sequence by the use of sequence number to identify each data unit within the data packets.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the transmit power levels of first and second base station transceivers, wherein the first and second base station transceivers are respectively associated with first and second sectors of a cell. The received signal strength of a communication signal arriving at the mobile station is initially determined. A power control value that is based on the received signal strength is then transmitted from the mobile station to the first and second base station transceivers. A first received power control value is next generated by attempting to receive the transmitted power control value at the first base station transceiver, and a second received power control value is generated by attempting to receive the transmitted power control value at the second base station transceiver. A common transmit power value is calculated at a base station controller for the first and second base station tranceivers when the first and second received power control values are unequal. The communication signal is then transmitted from the first and second base station transceivers in accordance with the common transmit power value.
