Abstract: In a cathode ray tube, for example, a color picture tube in which a plurality of electron beams are made to converge or cross each other substantially at the optical center of an electrostatic focusing lens by which the beams are focused on the electron-receiving screen of the tube; the focusing lens includes first and second axially spaced, annular electrodes extending around the tube axis and being at the same potential, and a third annular electrode assembly extending between the first and second electrodes and which includes an axial array of at least three annular electrode portions, the electrode portions at the ends of the axial array being at a different potential than the first and second electrodes to establish the focusing electric field and at least one of the electrode portions intermediate the end portions being at a potential that deviates from the potential of the end electrode portions in a direction toward the potential of the first and second electrodes to modify the electric field so that its equivalent optical lens has relatively flatter surfaces for further reducing aberrations of the beam or beams focused thereby.

Abstract: 1,241,366. Colour television tubes. SONY CORP. 9 Dec., 1969 [26 Dec., 1968], No. 60130/69. Heading H1D. In a colour television tube of the type wherein three coplanar beams diverge from the centre of a lens L M and are converged on a shadow mask or grill by means of outer and inner deflection plates P1 and P2, an intermediate apertured electrode 12 or 12 1 (Fig. 3) is disposed between each pair of plates and is connected to the inner one to maintain a substantially constant convergence field in spite of variations in the final anode potential which is also applied to the inner plates P2. Preferably, the outer plates P1 are earthed, as shown, to avoid the need of a second H.T. supply voltage, and the electrode 12 then also serves to reduce the field strength to a suitable value. In Fig. 3, the electrode 12 comprises five parallel wires extending transversely of the axis; alternative forms comprise longitudinal wires (Fig. 6A, not shown), a mesh (Fig. 6B, not shown), or a plate provided with large or small apertures (Fig. 6C and 6D, not shown).

Abstract: 1,246,198. Electron lenses. SONY CORP. 19 Dec., 1969 [19 Dec., 1968], No. 62129/69. Heading HID. A focusing lens for a cathode-ray display tube comprising outer cylindrical electrodes 17a and 18a, Fig. 2, operated at a high potential and an intermediate cylindrical lens 19a surrounding the ends of the outer electrodes and operated at a lower potential, is characterized in that an auxiliary apertured electrode 30 extends between the outer electrodes to reduce the potential gradient of the lens field thereby reducing spherical aberration. In one example the electrodes 17a and 18a are operated at 20kV whilst electrode 19a is earthed. Because the electrodes 17a and 18a are connected through electrode 30 there is no need for a connecting lead between them passing round the outside of electrode 19a, so the diameter of this electrode may be increased, thereby further reducing spherical aberration. In Fig. 2 the electrode 30 is a helical wire; alternative forms comprise axial wires (Fig. 4A, not shown), an apertured cylinder (Fig. 4B, not shown), and wire rings joined by axially-extending wires (Fig. 4C, not shown). The lens may be used in a colour display tube of the type wherein three coplanar beams are directed through the centre of the lens and are subsequently converged on a shadow mask or grill by means of electrostatic deflection plates (Fig. 5, not shown).
