Methods and devices for Laser Induced Fluorescence Attenuation Laser Induced Fluorescence Attenuation Spectroscopy (LIFAS) Spectrocopy, including, in particular, methods and devices for the detection of ischemia and hypoxia in biological tissue. The LIFAS method and apparatus preferably include a source adapted to emit radiation that is directed at a sample volume in a sample to produce return light from the sample, such return light including modulated return light resulting from modulation by the sample, a first sensor, displaced by a first distance from the sample volume for monitoring the return light and generating a first signal indicative of the intensity of return light, a second sensor, displaced by a second distance from the sample volume for monitoring the return light and generating a second signal indicative of the intensity of return light, and a processor associated with the first sensor and the second sensor and adapted to process the first and second signals so as to determine the modulation of the sample. The methods and devices of the inventions are particularly well-suited for determining the wavelength-dependent attenuation of a sample and using the attenuation to restore the intrinsic laser induced fluorescence of the sample. In turn, the attenuation and intrinsic laser induced fluorescence can be used to determined a characteristic of interest, such as the ischemic or hypoxic condition of biological tissue.
Abstract:
A variety of methods and apparatus for the detection of an analyte of interest in a fluid sample is provided which relies upon the interaction of a fluorophore and a chromophoric light absorbing compound for qualitative and quantitative results. The methods preferably employ fiber optic sensors in combination with fluorophores and/or proto-absorber substances in mobile and immobilized modes of use. The methods and apparatus rely upon the ability of the light absorbing compositions to absorb energy which is transferred either radiatively or non-radiatively by the fluorophore when in an excited state.

Abstract:
There are provided a control device of an image reading apparatus, an operation method and an operation program thereof, and an image detection system capable of quickly and easily outputting an image having an appropriate density for analysis from an image reading apparatus. An image receiving unit receives a pre-image output in pre-scanning performed before main scanning for outputting a main image for analysis in an image reading apparatus. A region information receiving unit receives information of a region in the pre-image designated by a user. A calculation unit calculates an appropriate voltage value that is a voltage value of the photomultiplier at which a density of the region becomes an appropriate density for analysis. A scanning conditions setting unit sets the appropriate voltage value as temporary scanning conditions of main scanning.

Water-soluble polymers may be added to an aqueous system to inhibit or decrease scale deposition within the aqueous system. In a non-limiting embodiment, the water-soluble polymer(s) may be or include polymaleates, polyacrylates, copolymers thereof, and combinations thereof. The treated aqueous system may include a decreased amount of scale deposition as compared to an otherwise identical aqueous system absent the water-soluble polymer(s).
Abstract:
A side illuminated multi point multi parameter optical fiber sensor that requires no sensitive coating is provided. This sensor comprises an optical fiber having at least one removed cladding section as the sensitive region, at least one probing light source that side illuminates the fiber, a power supply, a detector, a signal processor and a display. The sensitive optical fiber is optically affected by the presence of a measurand medium that can fluoresce, phosphoresce, absorb and/or scatter the probing light. This probing light is guided by the fiber core towards a detector which measures the light intensity and this light intensity is correlated with a measurand.
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides a method of characterising a dielectric material. The method comprises the step of providing a light source, a light collector and a sensor. The sensor is arranged so that an evanescent field of light penetrates through a surface of the sensor and surface plasmons are generated at the surface of the sensor when suitable light is directed along at least a portion of the sensor. The method also includes the step of exposing the surface of the sensor to the dielectric material so that an interface is formed between the surface and the dielectric material. Further, the method comprises guiding light along at least a portion of the sensor to generate the surface plasmons. In addition, the method comprises the step of collecting an intensity of light from the interface as a function of a spectral parameter of the light. Further, the present disclosure provides an apparatus for characterising the dielectric material in accordance with the method.

A measuring system for determining blood glucose includes a photometric measuring unit with a light source and a detector, and an analytical test element, to which a body fluid sample can be applied, and which can be placed in a beam path between the light source and the detector for optical detection of an analyte. For an improved multi-wavelength measurement, it is proposed that the light source includes a first emitter that can be actuated in a first wavelength range to emit pulsating alternating light and a second emitter that can be excited in a second wavelength range to emit fluorescent light.
