Abstract: Electrophotographic printers have raster output scanners (27) that correct for polygon facet (126) phasing errors and photoreceptor (10) position errors by aerial scan line adjustments. A photoreceptor position sensor senses the position of the photoreceptor (10) and a facet position sensor (137) senses the position of the polygon facets. A scan line position controller (119) produces a position signal that depends upon the photoreceptor position sensor and the facet position sensor (137). A piezoelectric-actuated lens mover assembly (118) receives the position signal and moves a pre-polygon lens (116) to adjust the scan line plane to correct for any misregistration. The piezoelectric-actuated lens mover assembly (118) includes a large displacement piezoelectric element and a flexible arm assembly (210) that holds the pre-polygon lens (116).

Abstract: An image sensor has a frame, a transparent cover which is mounted on the top of the frame and on which an original document is to be placed, and a base plate disposed within the frame. On the base plate, there are mounted a light emitting section, a lens for condensing the reflective light and a light receiving section. The base plate is disposed within the frame so that the light emitting section is located directly below the transparent cover and the optical axis of the condensing lens is inclined relative to the plane of the transparent cover. Light rays emitted from the light emitting section enter the transparent cover in a direction substantially perpendicular to the plane thereof and are reflected by the transparent cover slantingly toward the light receiving section. By arranging the condensing lens inclined relative to the plane of the transparent cover, the vertical distance between the light receiving section and the transparent cover can be reduced. The entire configuration of the frame is tapered toward the transparent cover on the top thereof. Thus, the image sensor can be more easily assembled into any electronic instrument. The light emitting section is enclosed by walls which are increased in reflectivity, resulting in an increase of the amount of irradiating light. The condensing lens can be mounted and held in a recess formed in the top of the frame without the need for any adhesive.

Abstract: A photosensor (20a) has a pair of n-type semiconductor layers (21U, 21D) formed on the major surface of a p-type semiconductor substrate (31). A light-shielding pattern (24) comprised of unit light-shielding layers (33) is formed on the major surface of the substrate. When the major surface is scanned by a light beam in the direction (DX) in which the unit light-shielding layers are aligned, a couple of photo-conversion signals indicating a current position of the light beam on the photosensor are generated in the photosensor. Since the light-shielding pattern is directly provided on the sensor body, no grating glass is required other than the photosensor.
