Abstract: Flow, and in particular nonuniform flow, as in a vascular system, is measured by applying a stochastic excitation signal to a system inlet which results in a measurable output signal at a downstream system outlet. Flow rate may be extracted by cross-correlating the excitation signal and the output signal. Calibration may be effected by conservation of mass principles whereby quantity type parameters are related to concentration type parameters. The stochastic signal has the characteristics of white noise, such that simplified spread spectral detection and signal extraction techniques may be employed to recover the desired intelligence.

Abstract: A probe apparatus for use with an optical oximeter and oximeter in which a pair of light emitting means preferably diodes (10, 20, 130, 132) emit light of narrow wavebands having known characteristic wavelengths through part of a patient onto a photosensor (30, 38). A coding means comprising resistor (40) of coded known resistance or else an eight bit connector (52') is used to enable the oximeter to calculate the co-efficient of extinction of the wavelengths of the LEDs. The resistor, LEDs and photosensor are mounted on self-attaching hook and eye tape (50) for mounting the probe onto the appendage of the patient. The probe is detachably wired to the oximeter, rendering the probe completely disposable. The oximeter is programmed at the factory to calculate the co-efficients of extinction of any LEDs which may be encountered in a series of disposable probes. From the co-efficients of extinction, the pulse rate and degree of arterial oxygen saturation is computed and displayed by the oximeter.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the rate and direction of flow of a liquid in a selected region of a body by NMR techniques. NMR is excited preferentially in a slice (43) of the body which includes the region and then a magnetic field (- Gz') having a gradient in a direction parallel to the flow of the liquid is applied, this field being effective to cause a phase difference between the resonance for the liquid which is flowing, or has flowed, in the region and the resonance for the rest of the slice. The free induction decay signal is measured, and the phase difference between the signal from the liquid, and the signal from the rest of the slice is related to the rate of flow of the liquid through the region.

Abstract: Thin film polarographic gas sensors are described wherein the electrodes are deposited on a flexible substrate. A bilumen monopolar catheter-type sensor has a thin cathode layer (8) deposited on the wall of one lumen (4), the distal end of which is sealed by a polyurethane plug (10) such that only the outer edge surface of the cathode layer (8) is in contact with a dip-coated permeable membrane (14). The cathode layer (8) extends to the proximal end of the catheter (2) where electrical contact is made with a conductor wire (16) through electrically-conductive epoxy resin (18). When the sensor is employed umbilically or intravascularly, the second lumen (6) may be employed to withdraw samples from the patient or supply fluids thereto. The cathode layer (8) may be deposited on the catheter material in long lengths, which are then subsequently cut to the appropriate length for individual catheter-type sensors.

Abstract: A heart-beat rate indicator comprises a detection electrode (1) receiving an electrocardiac potential signal, circuitry (2, 3,4,5, 6) receiving the electrocardiac potential signal and determining therefrom a heart-beat rate and a switching element (7), for example a P-channel MOSFET, one side of which is connected to the detection electrode and an input of the circuitry and the other side of which is connected to ground potential. A switching circuit, for example, comprising a mechanical switch and a flip-flop circuit controls the conductive state of the switching element.
