Abstract:
Abstract:
A system for evaluating nervous system function of a subject including generally an accelerometer sensor, a stimulus electrode assembly, and a portable device to which the sensor and electrode assembly are connected. The sensor measures the magnitude of the (stimulus evoked) movement of a body part of the subject along at least one axis of three dimensional space. The device contains electrical circuits for processing data from the sensor, generating stimuli to the electrode assembly, and timing both the extraction of sensor information and the delivery of stimuli. The sensor has a suction chamber for attaching the sensor to the desired body part site by static suction. To evaluate the nervous system function the magnitude of the monitored sensed (acceleration) movement is compared with a control value. When the nervous system being evaluated is the peripheral nerve of one side of the face, the control value can be determined by evoking and measuring movement on the opposite side of the face. For this embodiment, two pairs of electrodes are attached to a headband which holds them simultaneously against opposite sides of the face and a switch communicates the desired pair with the portable device.
Abstract:
@ An apparatus for detecting resonant frequency of bones has an electro-mechanical transducer arranged for application to the external skin surface covering a bone, the transducer being in a feed-back circuit with an amplifier and phase shifter having a unity gain and a loop phase of zero. The feed-back circuit is connected to a display comprising an A-D converter and a digital display. The apparatus displays the lowest order transverse mode set up in a bone. In a further embodiment the transducer is arranged to pierce the skin and to be in direct contact with a bone. The transducer has a coupling rod and a detector which may be both positioned at the same station on a bone or at spaced stations along a bone.

A displacement sensitive transducer (10) is formed by a body (11) of elastomeric materials such as silicone rubber to which is attached an electro magnetic radiation emitter/ receiver pair (14) or (20,21) arranged such that radiation emitted by the emitter (20) and received by the receiver (21) is attenuated to an extent determined by the radiation path length in the body (11), elastic variations in the geometrical shape of the body (11) arising from displacements of an article (16) being monitored and providing a measure of these displacements.
Abstract:
The identification system comprises input means for collecting a fingerprint from the front end of a finger and converting the fingerprint to image data; an image memory for storing the image data; and means for storing the features of a plurality of fingerprints. The respective feature includes a plurality of feature points and the relationship between one of the feature points and the adjacent feature points. Furthermore, there are provided selecting means for selecting one of the features of the plurality of fingerprints; and identifying means for verifying the features of the image data obtained by the input means according to the feature of the fingerprint selected by the selecting means. This identification system is accurate, high reliable, inexpensive and suitable for controlling of entry to and exit from security areas and of commercial transactions.
Abstract:
A system for monitoring bone union at a bone fracture (13) comprises a fracture cast sleeve (15) to the external surface of which is bonded a transducer (16). Transducer (16) is electrically-conductive and has an electrical resistance which varies with elastic extension and contraction of the transducer. The output of transducer (16) is applied via a resistance-sensitive network (18) to a data evaluating device (20) arranged to normalise signals received from transducer (16) with respect to the time interval during which that signal appears since the signal is of an impulse nature depending upon the rate at which the force is applied to the fracture (13). The normalised signal is further normalised having regard to the mass of the limb concerned and a plurality of such signals are stored in store (30) together with a data log from date data device (32) and these signals are fed to a trend evaluator (34) in order to predict the time interval before bone union occurs.
Abstract:
An oesophageal probe (1) for measuring anaesthesia comprises means (4), for example a water-filled balloon, for sensing pressure in the oesophagus, and means (5), for example an air filled balloon, for stimulating the oesophagus to cause contractions therein.
Abstract:
Systems and methods are provided for diagnosing the death of a fetus in utero. A first ECG signal from the fetus is detected. A second ECG signal from the mother simultaneously is detected. The two ECG signals are displayed on a common time base and compared to determine whether an ECG component originating with the fetus is present in the first ECG signal.
