    Abstract: A spectroscopic arrangement for examining a radiation spectrum has a number of detectors which can be positioned to desired spectral positions from a remote, normal position. Adjusters are provided which can selectively engage the detectors to bring them into the desired positions. When in position, the adjusters are released, leaving the detectors alone in their selected positions. A clamp can be used for the adjusters. The clamp can be operated from the remote position. The clamp can be effective for all the detectors. Alternatively, each detector has its own clamp assigned to it, and the clamps can be selectively actuated. The detectors can be positioned along the upper surface of a support. The latter can be even and the detectors provided with wheels.

The output end of the fiberoptic bundle is bonded to one side of a wedge-shaped linear variable interference filter. The other side of the filter is bonded to an array of photodiodes. Because each photodiode receives light that has passed through a different portion of the filter, each photodiode will respond to light of a different wavelength.

    Abstract: An arrangement of the Rowland character includes a support and a concave grating on the support for producing the spectrum characteristic of a sample being investigated. The support has a series of slits thereon which are positioned on the Rowland circle and are adjusted to the spectral lines of samples to be investigated. An element on the support is provided with a primary slit for directing the radiation derived from a sample being investigated onto the concave grating. The primary slit is positioned on the Rowland circle and the element provided with the primary slit is mounted on the support for movement along the arc of the Rowland circle. The element is mounted in such a manner as to be arrestable in a plurality of positions. The element is favorably in the form of a plate. A preferred embodiment contemplates the provision of a pair of grooves in the support, which latter may be in the form of a housing, with the grooves following the curvature of the Rowland circle and the element being guided in the grooves. The edges of the element located in the grooves may be provided with openings in which there are accommodated spherical members as well as biasing elements for urging the spherical members into contact with the grooves.

    Abstract: 1393849 Chemical analysis GOW-MAC INSTRUMENT CO Inc 12 Oct 1973 [6 Nov 1972] 47691/73 Heading G1A The invention relates to the chemical analysis of a material by its effect on the refractive index of a solvent, using the Christiansen filter effect, viz the difference in variation of the refractive index of solids and liquids with the wavelength of light. As illustrated Fig. 1, (not shown), the solvent (ISO-OCTANE) is pumped through parallel reference and sample tubes. The tubes are packed with grannules (e.g. LITHIUM FLUORIDE which has the same refractive index as ISO-OCTANE at the sodium-D-line, and hence transmits light without dispersion at this wavelength). The sample is injected into the solvent flowing through the measuring tube, and collimated light is projected through the tubes on to respective photo-sensors (e.g. photo-FET's), whose outputs are compared. Fig.4 illustrates the variation of refractive index with wavelength for the solid particles 55, pure solvent 57 and the solution 70. This shows the twc transmission bands around #1 and #2 for the reference and sample tubes. Since the total transmission increases with wavelength the relative amplitude of the signals may be used for measurement. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a mono-block cell construction with two parallel bores closed at the ends (axially) by glass discs and screwed bushes. The light in the diffusion "halo" instead the direct beam may be measured by blanking-off the centre of the photo-sensor Fig. 3 (not shown).
