A member such as a detector of a spectrometer, is positioned in a predetermined position by attaching it to saddle 74, Fig. 3, which is slidable along a notched bar 60, and has a notch engaging member 76, the bar 60 being urged by spring 68 at one end into engagement with the anvil 70 of a micrometer 72 at the other end, so that by moving a knurled knob 80, Fig. 5, cam pin 78 disengages member 76 to allow the saddle 74 to be coarsely adjusted to the nearest notch 62, and, after re-engagement of member 76, finely adjusted by micrometer 72. As shown, three detectors 14 are each mounted on a saddle and notched bar device so that the slits at the forward ends of ducts 16, leading to the photomultiplier tubes provided in the detectors, be in a line in the focal plane of spectrum 10. A second set of three detectors 14 is similarly positioned with the entrance slits of ducts 16 arranged in a line parallel to, but spaced from, the first line, the rays entering each slit being deflected by a concave mirror 24 into the photomultiplier tube. The casing 66, in which the notched bars 60 are mounted, is adjustably fixed to the remainder of the apparatus.

Spectrometric apparatus includes at least two detectors displacable relative to each other and spaced relatively to each other transversely across the width of the spectrum. Light from the top and bottom halves of a spectrum 10, Fig. 1, enters ducts 15 through a slits 18 and are reflected by mirrors 22 to respective photomultipliers 24. The detector units 14 may be moved along the spectrum separately to enable them to view any two spectral lines or the same line. In a modification, Fig. 3, each of the photomultipliers in replaced by three detector units 14 each having a duct 15a, 15b, 15c, mirrors 23 being located in the latter two ducts to deflect light from slits 18 to mirrors 22. The units may be slid along a bar 54 and angularly adjusted using the slots 56.

Abstract: A spectroscopic arrangement for examining a radiation spectrum has a number of detectors which can be positioned to desired spectral positions from a remote, normal position. Adjusters are provided which can selectively engage the detectors to bring them into the desired positions. When in position, the adjusters are released, leaving the detectors alone in their selected positions. A clamp can be used for the adjusters. The clamp can be operated from the remote position. The clamp can be effective for all the detectors. Alternatively, each detector has its own clamp assigned to it, and the clamps can be selectively actuated. The detectors can be positioned along the upper surface of a support. The latter can be even and the detectors provided with wheels.
