Abstract: 1,136,361. Braking systems for vehicles. SOC. ANON. ANDRE CITROEN. 2 May, 1967 [4 May, 1966], No. 20253/67. Heading F2F. A braking system for articulated vehicles comprises two slide valves operated by the brake pedal through a compensating bar and roller in accordance with the load on the tractor rear axle, one slide valve actuating the front brakes and the other slide valve actuating the rear brakes and a valve in the trailer braking system. In the figure an hydraulic system with reservoir 5 controls the tractor brakes 24, 27 and a vacuum system with reservoirs 58, 61 controls the trailer brakes 72. If the trailer is not coupled, the load on the tractor rear axle 36 will be light, and linkage 37-47 moves a roller 35 to the left (as shown). Depression of the brake pedal 34 then causes the first slide valve 18 to move downwards to connect lines 15 and 23. Pressure in reservoirs 9 and 11 is then communicated to the front brakes 24 and via line 23a to an auxiliary piston 26 on the rear brakes, producing a full application of the front brakes and a partial application of the rear brakes. If the rear axle 36 is loaded, e.g. if a trailer is connected, the linkage 37-47 moves the roller 35 to the right. Depression of the brake pedal 34 then moves a second slide valve 29 downwards to connect lines 16 and 52. Pressure in reservoirs 12 and 13 is then communicated via line 52 to the main piston 51 of the rear brakes and to a valve 55 in the trailer braking system, allowing vacuum from reservoir 58 to actuate the trailer brakes 72. Subsequently, the first slide valve 18 operates as before to actuate the tractor front brakes. Modifications.-The trailer braking system may be operated by compressed air instead of vacuum. The tractor braking system may also be pneumatic. The brakes may be drum or disc. The auxiliary piston 26 on the tractor rear brakes may be omitted.

Abstract: 1,186,763. Hydrostatic transmission of power. SOC. ANON. ANDRE CITROEN. 31 May, 1967 [16 June, 1966], No. 25209/67. Heading F2C. In a variable ratio hydrostatic transmission unit, a pump 5 and motors 18, 19, all of the rotary barrel multi-cylinder type, and a jack (not shown) for varying the motor displacements, are mounted on a load-carrying central block 1, and are enclosed by a housing 31, 32, 45 which forms a fluid reservoir. An input shaft 4 drives the pump barrel 5, rotatably supported in the block 1 by a bearing 6, via gears 7, 8. The pump pistons engage a part-spherical surface of an adjustable angle swash-plate 12 supported by bearings 13, 14 in arms 9, 10 of the block 1. A floating distributer 28 of the pump bears on a part-spherical surface 27 of the block and is connected by bores 29, 30 to a common distributer 20 for the motors. The barrels of motors 18, 19 are rotatably mounted in arms 24, 25 pivoted at 22, 23 to the block 1. The motors are radial-piston type, their displacements being adjusted by varying the eccentricity of the barrels relative to the shafts 37, 38 by acting on the arms 24, 25 by a jack (not shown) housed in a bore 43 of the block and controlled by valves (not shown) mounted in a cavity 42 of the block. The block 1 is supported on lugs 39, 40. The motors may alternatively be of the rotary barrel type similar to the pump.

Abstract: 1,133,217. Plate heat exchangers. SOC. ANON. ANDRE CITROEN. 20 Dec., 1965 [31 Dec., 1964], No. 53859/65. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger consists of a corrugated sheet constituting either a secondary surface element in a fluid passage (Figs. 1 to 3), or a heat transfer wall separating two fluids, said sheet being mounted on a plate so that the corrugations make continuous line contact along their lengths with the plate, the sheet being additionally corrugated in a direction transverse to the main corrugations such that the lines of contact between the sheet and the plate are sinuous. The heat exchanging fluids may be liquids or gases and the relative fluid flow may be cross-flow or contra-flow. The drawings show a contra-flow arrangement in which each corrugated sheet 6 is arranged between two plates 7, 7a respectively. The plates 7 comprise an outer casing of the heat exchanger completed by end plates 11. The plates 7a are shorter than the plates 7 to provide header spaces as shown, and are spaced apart by transverse walls 9 arranged as in Fig. 6. The walls 9 define inlet and outlet passages 10, 10a respectively for one of the fluids. The end walls 11 are apertured to provide inlet and outlet openings 8 for the fluid X flowing on one side of each corrugated sheet 6. The other fluid Y enters the passages 10 from one side of the heat exchanger and passes from these into the internal header space (the right-hand space between plates 7a and end wall 11 in Figs. 4 and 6), from whence the fluid divides into streams which flow over the corrugated sheet surfaces to the other header (left hand side of Figs. 4 and 6) whence the fluid streams recombine and flow into the passages 10a to be discharged from the other side face of the heat exchanger as shown. Other forms described (Figs. 8-10) comprise a single corrugated sheet (12) sandwiched between two plates (13, 14) or a single corrugated sheet mounted on one plate. In this latter form the corrugated sheet and plate provide only one set of heating fluid passages, the other fluid being a gas which is heated by contact with the corrugated sheet.

Abstract: 1,141,337. Fluid-pressure brakes. SOC. ANON ANDRE CITROEN. 27 April, 1967 [4 May, 1966], No. 19445/67. Heading F2F. A brake valve assembly 16, adapted to form part of a fluid-pressure braking system of an articulated vehicle wherein the tractor brakes are controlled hydraulically via a dual brake valve 14, which apportions the fluid pressures in lines 15, 15a according to the loads on the front and rear axles in the absence of the trailer, and wherein the trailer brakes are controlled pneumatically through an application valve 17 operable by an output member 51 of the valve assembly 16, consists of a slide valve 41 adapted to connect one or the other of lines 15, 15a to a chamber 48 according to whether or not pressure exists in line 15a, thus allowing for failure of either line while retaining independence, a piston 49 responsive to the pressure in chamber 48 to actuate the output member 51 and, via a lever 56, operate the input member 59 of valve 17 in accordance with pedal pressure, and a load-responsive throttling valve between each of the lines 15, 15a and the corresponding one of a pair of output lines 18, 18a leading respectively to the front and rear wheel brakes of the tractor, the two throttling valves being controlled together in response to the load on the rear axle of the tractor, whereby when the trailer is being supported by the tractor its brakes are applied before those on the tractor. Each throttling valve consists of a ball 60 pressed against its seat with a force which is variable in accordance with load on the rear axle of the tractor, the force being applied through an arm 65 or 65a. These arms are carried on shafts 75 carrying levers 76, 76a which are connected by links 77, 77a, a beam 78 and spring 79 to a lever 81 associated with a shock absorber 82 of the tractor rear axle suspension. When the trailer is disconnected from the tractor the arms 65, 65a are clear of the balls 60, as shown, whereby no throttling of the fluid flow occurs. A ball valve 68 is associated with each of the throttling valves to allow return of the hydraulic fluid on brake release. Accumulators 11, 12, in association with a main accumulator 7 and pump 4, supply hydraulic fluid to the brake valve 14 which is operated by a pedal. A main air reservoir 22 supplies compressed air to the valve 17 and via a hose 28 to an emergency relay valve 26 on the trailer which applies the trailer brakes in the case of pressure failure by supplying air from an emergency reservoir 29 on the trailer. Normally air is supplied to the trailer brake cylinders 32 via the valve 17 and hose 25. In addition, a parking brake is provided for the trailer comprising a handbrake-operated valve 34 on the tractor supplying air from an auxiliary air reservoir 23 via a hose 35 to an auxiliary trailer brake cylinder 36.
