Abstract: A process for selectively separating a metallic constituent from other metals and other materials accompanying the metallic constituent in a mixture is described. The process comprises the step of providing the mixture in an aqueous solution such that the metallic constituent forms a complex anion in the solution. One or more of the other metals forms a cation or a complex cation in the solution. Another step includes contacting the solution with one or more additives to form layered double hydroxide (LDH) material in situ such that the complex anion is intercalated within interlayers of the LDH material and wherein one or more of the other metals are incorporated into the LDH material's crystal structure or matrix. Another step involves the addition of an LDH to an aqueous solution. The process involves selectively recovering the metallic constituent from the interlayer of the LDH by subjecting the LDH to a recovery treatment step(s) and as required, methods to modify the LDH to facilitate metal separation and recovery or contaminant stabilisation.

Abstract: A safety arrangement comprises a unit 20 to be located beneath a bonnet 8 of a motor vehicle. The unit can become of increase length (fig 5) in response to a signal from a sensor 35 and may comprise a bellows-sleeve 21 and a gas generator 19. The unit has a catch arrangement 23 that engages part 9 of the bonnet structure so that part of the bonnet structure is engaged and retained when the length of the unit is increased. When the front part of a motor vehicle strikes a pedestrian the bonnet 8 is lifted by unit 20 allowing further deformation of the bonnet decreasing the severity of possible injury suffered by the pedestrian.

Abstract: A portable position tracking apparatus including a power supply, a position sensor that receives signals and uses the signals to determine an absolute position of the apparatus, a trigger sensor that detects a trigger, and an electronic processing device in communication with the position and trigger sensor that monitors the power supply to determine an available power, determines the trigger in response to a signal from the trigger sensor, in response to detection of the trigger, uses the available power to control operation of the position sensor to thereby selectively determine the absolute position, and stores an indication of a position of the apparatus in a store at least partially in accordance an absolute position.
