    Abstract: 653,006. Rubber thread. ANDREWSALDERFER PROCESSING CO., Inc. March 6, 1948, No. 7005. Convention date, July 30, 1947. [Class 70] Rubber thread is obtained by cutting a sheet of uncured rubber stock into a multiplicity of threads, stretching the threads, adhering them to a moving surface, permitting the threads to relax to remove internal stress, while the threads are adhering to the surface, and curing the relaxed threads without removing them from said surface. In a preferred method a stock made from rubber, GR-S, antioxidant, softener, zinc sulphide, zinc oxide, diphenyl guanidine, and either dipentamethylene thiuram tetrasulphide or a mixture of sulphur, the zinc salt of mercaptobenzthiazole, and tetramethyl thiuram monosulphide is formed into sheets 1 (Fig. 1) and passed through a splicing-machine 5, and then over supporting roll 12 and under roll 13 which is submerged in a bath 14. This bath preferably contains a soap solution which facilitates the cutting by knives 16. The separate threads now pass into bath 20 which preferably contains a water-soluble accelerator such as piperidinium pentamethylene dithiocarbamate or butyl zimate or dibutyl ammonium oleate and then into bath 27 which contains a wax solution preferably containing carnauba wax. The stretched and coated threads pass on to belt 30 to which they adhere and then pass through vulcanizing chamber 32 (Fig. 1A) in which the threads are cured. The threads are then stripped off the vulcanizing belts by rolls 35 and 36 and after passing through soap-storing box 38 passes to the packaging stage.

Class 70 [Also in Group VIII] A machine for subdividing a sheet of rubber or the like into a multiplicity of threads comprises two sets of rotatable disc-knives arranged in interleaved relation with relatively small arcs of adjacent pairs of knives in overlapping, shearing relation, the knives being spaced a distance greater than the thickness of a knife to provide a throat narrower then the thickness of the sheet in which a portion of the rubber will be compressed during the cutting operation. As shown in Fig. 4, rubber R is sheared at the points of contact of opposing sets or disc cutters 15 and during cutting the individual threads are deformed so as to extend into the space between the non-cutting edges of opposing discs, thus producing an axial pressure in the direction of the arrows q, which pressure forces the cutting edges of the opposing discs against one another. The shafts on which the two sets of discs are mounted are relatively inclined at a small angle as shown in Fig. 5 so as to produce a more pronounced shearing action.
