Abstract: 18,672. Blanchard, F. C., Crocker, E. B., Eddy, H. E., and Ashcroft Manufacturing Co. Aug. 14. Testing paper &c.-In apparatus for testing the strength of paper and like materials, the paper is fastened between the jaws of a clamp mounted upon a lever, and is brought into contact with a spring-carried plunger by means of a screw. Means for centring the plunger, and non-return indicating- apparatus are provided. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a lever C carries the clamp, the upper jaw E of which is controlled by a screw E. The clamp is lowered to bring the paper against the plunger B', mounted upon a spring arm B, by means of a screw D. The movement of the arm B actuates a pointer f through a slotted link f , Fig. 4, which allows the plunger to move freely upwards without affecting the indication when the paper is ruptured, and a sector and pinion f , f . The pointer is frictionally held at the indication corresponding to the breaking-stress by means of a grooved brake-drum and spring-rod f , f and can be reset by depressing a push-rod f , which causes a lever f to engage a pin f upon the brake-drum, thereby rotating the spindle f and the sector and pinion. In modification, a camlever or a spring-controlled lever controls the upper jaw of the clamp.
