    Abstract: A fluid bed dryer comprising a drying chamber and a heating jacket contiguous with a drying chamber. The drying chamber and the heating jacket are each adapted to contain a bed of fluidizable particulate heat transfer material and each has a fluidizing gas inlet and an exhaust gas outlet. The drying chamber also has a feed inlet and a feed outlet. The fluid bed dryer may be used in a heat exchange system in combination with means for conveying a slurry comprising liquid and combustible waste solids to the feed inlet of the drying chamber of the fluid bed dryer; a reactor having a feed inlet, a reaction section, and a vapor exhaust port; conveyor means for transferring solids from the feed outlet of the drying chamber to the feed inlet of the reactor; conduit means connecting the vapor exhaust port of the reactor to the fluidizing gas inlet of the heating jacket of the dryer; and means for providing fluidizing gas to the fluidizing gas inlet of the drying chamber.

    Abstract: A fluidized bed system for pyrolysis or incineration of solid wastes is provided. The solids feed is force fed to a fluidized bed apparatus having a conically shaped distributor plate and a first internal chamber above the distributor plate and a smaller second internal chamber connected to the first chamber and positioned directly below the first chamber. Solid waste is fed into the apparatus by a feeder which seals the feeder from the apparatus at a point spaced from hot-zone of the apparatus. The system has fluidizing gas inlets which are designed so that fluidized bed in the first internal chamber is more highly fluidized than the fluidized bed in the second internal chamber. A lock in the second internal chamber permits removal of nonreacted materials without interruption in operation of the system.

    Abstract: A device is provided for delivering a solid feed to a reactor operating at elevated temperatures. Pressure within the reactor is controlled outside the reactor hot zone. The device has two conveyors separated by an expansion chamber. The first of the conveyors has an extrusion zone in which the solid feed is extruded into a plug which functions as a seal for the reactor. The plug is broken up in the expansion chamber with the aid of a rotating ram which is designed to seal the first conveyor in the event the extruding solid plug fails to provide the necessary seal or in the event the feed device is shut down. The second conveyor delivers the feed into the reactor.
