Abstract: A composition which is solid and melts at 75 DEG F. or higher, comprises a partially saponified vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, a cross-linking agent which is a methylolated melamine ether, and a solvent which is compatible with the binder and which includes an aromatic compound which is solid at 75 DEG F. Suitable solvents are biphenyl, paradichlorobenzene and naphthalene, and may contain additional high-boiling solvents such as methyl pyrrolidone, butyrolactone, isophorone, methyl benzoate, dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethyl sulphone, and diethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate. The composition may also contain vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-maleic acid copolymer and ethyl methacrylate-methyl acrylate copolymer as modifying resins. Other ingredients present include pigments, epoxidized soyabean oil, chlorinated biphenyl, bisphenol-polyglycidyl ether, hydrogenated castor oil, 3,4-epoxycyclohexyl - trimethoxysilane, dioctyl phthalate, and silicone oil.ALSO:Articles of glass, metal, ceramic, plaster or plastics are coated with a solid composition which melts at 75 DEG F or higher and which comprises a partially saponified vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, an ether of methylolated melamine as cross-linking agent, and a solvent which is compatible with the binder and which includes an aromatic compound which is solid at 75 DEG F. Suitable solvents are biphenyl, paradichlorobenzene, and naphthalene and may include additional high-boiling solvents such as methyl pyrrolidone, butyrolactone, isophorone, methyl benzoate, dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethyl sulphone, and diethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate. The composition may also include pigments, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-maleic acid copolymer, ethyl methacrylate-methyl acrylate copolymer, epoxidised soyabean oil, chlorinated biphenyl, bisphenol A-polyglycidyl ether, hydrogenated castor oil, 3 and 4-epoxycyclohexyl trimethoxysilane, dioctyl phthalate and silicone oil. The compositions cross link on baking. The coating may be applied by dipping, spraying, roller coating, screening and stencilling.
