Plastic compositions containing magnesium oxide and ferrous sulphate.-Ferrous sulphate is used for the whole or part of the sulphate in oxysulphate cements. The oxide constituent may be magnesium oxide, and retarders such as boric acid or accelerators such as alum may be added. The mixture can be kept dry, ready for gauging with water.

Compound sheet material.-Sheet metal for constructional work is covered on one or both sides with a covering of asbestos or like fibrous sheet material. The covering consists of asbestos sheeting containing a cementitious material formed by the interaction of a zinc salt with a water soluble silicate such as sodium or potassium silicate. The asbestos with the zinc salt mav be produced as described in Specification 264,583, and is placed upon the metal sheet, moistened with solution of silicate and subjected to a pressing operation at a temperature of 300‹ F.

    Abstract: 195,666. Wilson, W. G., and Bell's United Asbestos Co., Ltd. Oct. 11, 1921. Clutches, friction. - The lining of a clutch is secured to a metal backing by a bifurcated rivet which has its inside faces d flared apart for about one third of the length of the shank b and its outside faces reduced for about two thirds of their length so that when driven the prongs turn outwards and do not pass through the lining. The outside faces are semicircular from the point e until it joins the curve f which meets the flared face d in the chisel edge g. The distance between the edges g is slightly less than the diameter of the shank. In a modification, a V-shaped portion is cut to form the bifurcations and the prongs bent to shape. In another modification, the shank is only split over one half its length. A punch having a V-shaped cavity is shown and described to facilitate the introduction of the rivet. The surfaces of the rivet may be roughened or knurled and the head may be countersunk.
