Abstract: 3296. Bennett, J. E., and Bennett, J. E. Feb. 11. Condensers; evaporators.-Relates to tubular apparatus for heating, distilling, condensing, and concentrating liquids &c. The two vertical or inclined end chests a, b, Fig. 1, are united by horizontal tubes c which are stepped thereinto and connect the interiors of the chests. Through these tubes smaller tubes d pass from the outer face of the one chest to the outer face of the other, being flanged and bolted to the chest a. At the opposite.end of the tube a stuffing-box b permits of expansion and contraction. Steam or other heating-fluid or cooling-fluid is admitted by a pipe e and passes out by the trunnion g ; or, by using a second trunnion h for admission, the set of tubes can be rotated to any inclined position. Stops b may be placed in the chests between alternate pairs of tubes to cause the steam to pass through adjacent horizontal tubes in opposite directions The liquid which is to be cooled or heated flows within the tubes d and about the tubes c ; and the active fluid passes inside the tubes c and around the tubes d. In other forms the chests are horizontal and the tubes vertical. For treating wort, the chests are ring-shaped and horizontal, with vertical tubes arranged in a circle.

Abstract: 21,352. Bennett, J. Oct. 22. Strong-rooms.-The floors, walls, and Hat roof of a building such as a strong-room are formed of parallel steel joists a arranged in stepped or zigzag manner and embedded in concrete b. Tie-bolts c and distance-pieces d secure the joists in position until the concrete has set. In another form, the alternate joists or those symmetrically placed with respect to the tie, are omitted and the others are placed nearer together.

Abstract: 2439. Bennett, J. F., and Dutchman, E. Feb. 2. Curling stones.-In a castor for a rink curling stone of the kind in which a main ball C is supported on bearing-balls G, a ball race is made in the base of the curling-stone, Fig. 3, or in a socket J, Fig. 4, screwed into the base, and a cap E is applied and secured by means of flanges E . Cotton-wool or the like and a lubricant are placed in the cap E, and an india-rubber cushion may be placed around the body of the curling- stone. Specification 25,092/02 is referred to.

Abstract: 408. Bennett, J. F., and Duffield, J. Jan. 7. Carburetting, for internal-combustion engines. Air entering a chamber D by a pipe E passes through a perforated bottom D and impinges on a shallow layer of fuel maintained at the bottom of the carburettor A by a float B in a recess A'. The carburetted air then passes through a chamber D' and pipe E' to the engine. The partition D'instead of being centrally arranged may be arranged as shown in dotted lines and be of conical shape in order to increase the area of the bottom D . The carburettor is heated by exhaust gases in the jacket AJ. The air may be drawn through the fuel by inserting tubes in the bottom D of the chamber D', or by so arranging the fuel level that the bottom D' is normally immersed. Additional air may be admitted by a valve F actuated by suction or mechanically. The surface of fuel may be increased by reducing the diameter of the float B.

Abstract: 27,808. Bennett, J. F. Dec. 21. [Cognate Application No. 3771, A.D. 1909, dated Feb. 15.] Gas and like engines.-In pressure-determining apparatus for gas and like engines in which an expansion-chamber is inserted between the cylinder or cylinders and the pressure guage in order to obviate damage to the mechanism of the gauge, a relief-cock is fitted to the chamber shown below the expansion-chamber A and communicating with it and with any one of the various cylinders. This relief - cock may be used to replace the ordinary compression-taps on the various cylinders.

Abstract: 21,990. Bennett, J. Oct. 5. Glazing roofs &c.-Caps of various sections are made of lead with a steel or like reinforcing-core, the lead wholly or partly enclosing the core. Bent metal strips g, fixed at intervals to or integral with the core f, engage with screw-eyes h, Fig. 2, staples k, Fig. 4, or studs l, Fig. 5. The compound cap is thus pressed on the glass, and the glass on the glazing-bar, by means which are entirely closed in and protected from the weather. The glazing-bars are provided with channels q to carry off moisture. A grooved washer r and an eaves bar s, Fig. 1, connect the glazing-bar and the roof purlin b. The cap is held at its lower end by a stop-plate i, Fig. 1.
