A heat-distributing insert (7) is provided within the heating element (5), the heating element and the insert being sized and shaped to define a heating chamber for an optical fibre arrangement. The apparatus includes means for passing electric current through the heating element (5), and means (8) for supplying and maintaining an inert atmosphere within the heating chamber.

Abstract: A planar, p-n junction device has electrical contact made to the active region, the capping layer (4) having been selectively removed through a mask (5, 6). The selective removal of the capping layer may be performed prior to a diffusion step in which the junction is formed, or the dopant may be diffused through the capping layer (4) and the selective removal performed subsequently. In the latter instance the capping layer (4) is preferably etched through a second mask (8,9) having a smaller window (9) in register with the window (6) in the mask layer (5) which is used for the diffusion stage. The device finds particular application as a photodiode detector in optical communications.

Abstract: A semiconductor laser amplifier includes both a waveguide layer (3) and an active layer (4). In use, an optical wave in the active layer (4) interacts with the waveguiding layer to reduce the polarisation sensitivity of the amplifier. A short, thick active layer is not required, typical dimensions being 250 or 500 νm long, by 0.2 νm high. The mesa (15) is typically about 2 νm wide, but may be wider.

Abstract: High powered optoelectronic devices are continuously monitored to detect potentially dangerous default conditions in the transmission channel to which the signal generators are connected. The monitoring comprises continuously measuring the level of signals reflected from the optical transmission channel and performing corrective action when the level of said reflected signals suddenly changes. Preferably the monitoring comprises comparing the absolute level of a proportion of the reflected signals with the absolute level of a portion of the output of the signal generator. The absolute level of reflected signals will depend upon the power input into the channel and the level of reflected signals will rise if the input power rises. It is therefore desirable to take the input power into account in assessing whether or not a default condition exists.
