Metal-heating furnaces; crucible and muffle furnaces.-A gas-heated furnace for annealing and hardening and for use as a muffle or as a crucible furnace comprises a longitudinal combustion chamber b supplied with combustible mixture through separately-controlled pipes f and with supplementary air through separately controlled passages c. The sole a is supported on ribs a so that there are heating-flues beneath it. The burner pipes f are inclined, and are jointed to the furnace by coned ends and bolts h. The outer portions of the passages c may be of inverted-U form in the thickness of the furnace wall for the purpose of heating the air. The combustion chamber b, instead of being central, may be at one side.

Abstract: 25,002. Burnett, J. R. Dec. 2. Heating water &c.-A water-heater consists of a body part made of inner and outer cylinders b, a, the annular space c between them being closed at each end. Opening into this thin water space are inclined and spirally arranged cross-tubes d. Supported on the body part is a cistern or tank e having a conical flue f through it. From this a downcomer g is fitted, leading to the lower part of the water space c. The heated water on rising can be drawn off by the tapj, or, if this is closed, flows back to the tank through the branch pipe i. In a modification, the tank e is dispensed with and the top end of the body part has a water-jacket, from which a flow pipe runs to hot-water radiators and the like, a return pipe being fitted at the bottom of the water-heater. A casing may be fitted to pass the products of combustion round the outside of the heater in this case.
