Abstract: 1,137,659. Differential gear. DUALOC ENG. CO. 17 Aug., 1967, No. 37838/67. Heading F2D. In a motor vehicle self-locking bevel differential gear, each of two input planets 36 meshing output side wheels 28, 30 has an elongated bore 54 through which the planet cross-pin 38 engages, the elongation being such that at one end thereof the axes of the planets 36 and crosspin 38 coincide to permit normal differential action, but in the event of loss of traction, allowing spin to occur at one or other output shaft 20, 22, the planets rock to the opposite end to a position eccentric to said pin whereby, the differential gear unit is locked against differential action. As shown, cylindrical bearing sleeves 48 are on the cross-pin 38 and are slidably journalled in the eccentric bores 54 of the planets 36 which are outwardly biased, against part-spherical cage seatings 42, by a compression spring 50. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the sleeves (70) have an external surface conforming to but elongated less than the planet bores to reduce working surface pressures. In Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the planets are formed with conical bores (90) and engage over flats (84) on the cross-pin, slipper guide blocks (86) being arranged in the bores each side of the flats permitting relative movement between the cross-pin and planets for locking as outlined above.
