Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic waste treating method by which the amount of sludge to be formed can be reduced and the reduction of sludge can be attained more economically by a simplified procedure.
SOLUTION: This organic waste treating method is characterized by including a step to supply organic waste to an ATAD reactor 58, a step to oxidize at least a part of the biomass 62 produced in the reactor 58 and obtain an oxidized effluent 66 and a step to return the effluent 66 to the reactor 58. Nutriment is removed from a clear supernatant liquid 72 obtained by decantation. And also a method, in which organic waste is supplied to a mixer 54 through a crusher 86, the crushed and mixed waste is supplied to an AAD vessel 88 for removing methane gas 90 and the methane-removed waste is supplied to the reactor 58, is disclosed. Solids are separated from the effluent discharged from the reactor 58 regardless of whether or not the nutriment is removed from the liquid 72.

Abstract: A vacuum sewer system and a method of operating such system is disclosed. The system includes a sewage holding tank (16A-D) and a lateral flow line (24A-D) and a vacuum valve (18A-D) associated with the holding tank (16A-D) for permitting a quantity of wastewater to be drawn out of the holding tank (16A-D) by a vacuum environment. The wastewater is drawn through the lateral flow line (24A-D) and a main pipeline (30) to a desired collection location (38). A plurality of air inlet valves (32A-H) are arranged at spaced locations along the main pipeline (30) for facilitating the flow of wastewater through the lateral flow line (24A-D) so that a large volume of the wastewater can flow through the lateral flow line (24A-D) in a given time.

Abstract: Methods of soil containment and soil remediation are disclosed. The methods contemplate selecting a surface area (26) associated with a subterraneal volume (10) wherein the subterraneal volume includes ground water (14) beneath the surface area. Barrier means (20) are arranged around at least part of the perimeter of the subterraneal volume for isolating the surface area and the associated subterraneal volume from adjacent subterraneal volumes. The ground water table is then lowered to a desired depth so that a contaminated vadose (28) is exposed. The ground water is maintained at such lowered depth by means of gas pressure. Optionally, the exposed vadose zone may be remediated.
