Abstract: The method involves feeding power from a source (1) for the measurement to the unloaded switching chamber (2), e.g. a vacuum switch, over a limited period during mechanical opening or closing. The time variation of the discharge between the switch parts is detected, using a coupled inductor coil (4), by a measurement and storage appts. (6). At least two characteristic parameters extracted from the variation are compared with defined values and parameters derived for evaluation of the functional reliability. The characteristic parameters can be coupled with an additional quality parameter for the evaluation of the functional reliability. The characteristic parameters can be the maximum amplitude and the duration of the discharge.

Abstract: Arrangement for trace gas analysis with a radiation source for UV light and with an ionisation chamber and an anode and a cathode assigned to the latter. In the case of such an arrangement, it is intended to improve the measuring accuracy and sensitivity. According to the invention, this is achieved by locating the ionisation chamber inside a space bounded by at least one anode (4.1; 4.2; 4.3) and at least one cathode (5.2; 6.2). In particular, an elongated anode (4.1; 4.2; 4.3) is arranged, to which an elongated cathode (5.2; 6.2) is assigned such that the ionisation chamber is formed as a flow channel (7.2; 8.2) between the two and such that the flow channel is covered on both sides of the anode and cathode vertically with respect to its extent between the anode and the cathode. The arrangement is suitable in particular for detecting pollutants.

Abstract: The modulator has at least two electrodes (2,3) esp. for generating a predetermined phase angle between two linearly polarised waves perpendicular to each other. An active solid state crystal (1) is arranged between two separate transparent surface electrodes. Each electrode may be attached to a substrate (4,5) esp. on the crystal side of the substrate (4,5). The distance between the crystal and the electrodes is preferably between 0 and tenths of a micron. An immersion fluid e.g. glycerine, may be provided between the crystal and the electrodes. The active crystal may have a thickness of one to two millimetres. The substrate and electrodes preferably pass light in the wavelength range of between 180 and 1500 nanometres. The substrate may be made of quartz glass or a transparent material.

Abstract: A method for monitoring and displaying the decay of a switching arc w.r.t. time is of particular advantage for protective switchgear operating in vacuum or in an arc-suppressant gas. The magnetic and electric fields generated by the ac plasma during switching are sensed by an EM search coil (2) and/or receiving antenna positioned within a range of 2 metres from the arc chambers. The resultant signals are amplified (3) and evaluated (4) so that selected parameters e.g. maximum amplitude and duration of the switching transient can be compared with acceptable norms (5) for display (6) and the indexing of performance efficiency.
