Abstract: 224,267. Eveleigh, E. F., Robinson, G. C., and Ramsden, G. July 9, 1923. Valves; valve gear.- Arc-shaped slide valves 20, fitted in longitudinal grooves formed in the piston so as to reciprocate therewith, control transfer ports 13 and exhaust ports 14. The slides enter recesses 10 in the cylinder head and may be formed integral with packing-rings 21, 22, Fig. 5, arranged to fit in grooves 24, 25, Fig. 3, in the piston, a lighter ring being mounted behind the ring 21 in a groove sunk in the groove 24. Inlet to the crank case is controlled by a disc 31 mounted on the flywheel and pressed by springs against the crank case, through a port in which, and through ports 32, 38 in the disc and Hywheel, the charge enters. Spring-pressed packing-rings 35 are fitted on the flywheel. In a modification, slide valves on the piston control exhaust only, slides fixed to the cylinder head and working in grooves in the piston controlling transfer ports formed in the cylinder and piston. According to the Provisional Specification, the slide valves may be on the outside of the cylinder; or instead of using slide valves, an exhaust poppet valve in the cylinder head may be opened by the engagement of the piston with an extension of the valve, and a transfer valve opened by contact with the crank case, or a rotary transfer valve on the piston may be opened by contact with a cam or other means on the crank case and, by means of an extension, may rotate an exhaust valve in the cylinder head; or the rotary valves may be outside, or independent of, the cylinder.
