Abstract: A cannula for intraocular surgery including a cup, a tube including a wall and having a tube outer diameter, the tube extending from the cup to a distal end and defining a longitudinal axis. In one implementation, the distal end includes a first portion and a second portion, the first portion having a tip and being narrower than the second portion. A gripping section is formed in the wall. The gripping section has a diameter that is less than the tube outer diameter. The gripping section allows the sclera to deform into the reduced diameter in order to increase a retention force of the cannula in the eye while minimizing damage to the tissue of the eye.

Abstract: A non-linear cut-rate multiplier for a vitreous cutter is provided whereby a signal from a host drive system may be multiplied in non-linear fashion to achieve significantly higher cut- rates for the vitreous cutter. Depending upon the cut-rate received from the host drive system, the multiplier may be configured to generate a subsequent cut-rate which is, potentially, linear for lower cut-rates of the host drive system and variably non-linear for higher cut-rates of the host drive system.

Abstract: An aspiration system (10) having pressure controlled and flow controlled modes, comprises connective plumbing (26), a collector (14), a pump (12), a variable flow resistor (20), a pressure sensor (18), and a control circuit (24). The connective plumbing (26) includes a conduit (28) which communicates with the surgical site. The variable flow resistor (20) and the pressure sensor (18) are in fluid communication with the conduit (28) by the connective plumbing (26). In the pressure controlled mode, the variable flow resistor (26) maintains a pre-selected pressure according to an output signal (50) from the pressure sensor (18). In the flow controlled mode, the pump (12) maintains a pre-selected flow according to a pressure differential in the connective plumbing across the variable flow resistor (20). The system (10) includes a gas source (22) inputted into the variable flow resistor (20) to provide a known pressure against which the pressure in the remainder of the connective plumbing is compared to establish the pressure differential. The connective plumbing (26) further includes a flow director (16) permitting flow only in one direction.

Abstract: A device (10) for injection of fluidic materials into body tissue includes a syringe (22) and an injection housing (24). The syringe (24) includes a first end (26), a second end (28), a hollow barrel (30), a plunger (32), and a rod (34) which extends through the second end (28) of the syringe (24). The housing (24) further includes a first end (42), a second end (44), and a bore (46). The first end (42) of the housing is disposed in juxtaposed relationship with the second end (28) of the syringe (22). The rod (34) extends beyond the second end (44) of the housing (24). A piston (72) travels within the bore (46) in a reciprocal fashion, and cooperates with the rod (34) in a ratchet-like fashion. The piston (72) engages the rod (34) as the piston (72) travels toward the first end (42) of the housing (24), and disengages from the rod (34) as the piston (72) travels toward the second end (44) of the housing (24). The plunger (32) of the syringe (22) is thereby advanced in increments, each of which is translatable to a specific volume of fluidic material.
