Un sistema de comunicación (100) para entregar mensajes de fax que comprende: una pluralidad de agentes de transferencia de mensajes, MTA, (106) para transferir y recibir mensajes; una pasarela (104) conectada con la red telefónica pública conmutada PSTN, (4), teniendo la PSTN un primer terminal de fax; y un servidor (102) que se comunica con la pasarela (104) mediante una red de transmisión por paquetes y en el que el servidor se comunica con la pluralidad de MTAs, caracterizado por el hecho de que el servidor (102) simula un segundo terminal de fax hacia la pasarela, establece comunicación con la pasarela a través de la red de transmisión por paquetes empleando un protocolo de señalización estándar, e intercambia datos de fax mediante el protocolo ITU T.38, finaliza una llamada de fax que proviene del primer terminal de fax, almacena datos de fax en una base de datos de medios, determina una dirección de destino de un miembro de la pluralidad de MTAs, se conecta al miembro de la pluralidad de MTAs y crea un mensaje de fax para transferirlo en un formato compatible con el miembro de la pluralidad de MTAs.
