Abstract: 811,726. Counting-apparatus. JARRELLASH CO. Aug. 30, 1955 [Sept. 3, 1954], No. 24899/55. Class 106 (1). The number registered by a scaling unit, e.g. a multi-gap gas-filled discharge tube, is indicated by applying thereto a number of fixed frequency pulses sufficient to fill or empty the unit and either applying those pulses to a motor driving an appropriately calibrated indicating device or otherwise synchronously operating such a device. In one arrangement, Fig. 3, the scaling unit 19 counts particles 14 on a bed 15 as it is moved along a path 16. The particles are illuminated and a photo-multiplier 12 produces a pulse as each passes. As the bed completes its movement, a switch 21 is closed to energize a relay 23 which opens contacts 20 in the input circuit of the scaling unit and closes contacts 24, 25 so that pulses from a generator 28 are applied to the scaling unit 19 and to the indicating device 29. When the scaling unit is filled, a signal on a lead 33 operates a relay 32 which opens contacts 30, 31 in the leads from the pulse generator 28. The indicating device 29, which has then registered the complement of the number previously registered by the scaling unit, may be calibrated to give a direct reading appropriate to the counting operation being performed. In a modification, the counting action in the scaling unit is reversed and the latter produces a control signal to cut off the supply of pulses when it has been returned to zeroregistering condition. In a different arrangement, Fig. 5, several photo-multipliers 40, 41, 42 control respective multivibrators 43, 44, 45. Pulses derived from the latter are counted by corresponding scaling units 49, 50, 51. The pulses originating from the photo-multiplier 40 occur at a greater frequency than those in the other channels and when the scaling unit 49 is filled, a relay 52 is operated which, by contacts 54, renders the multivibrators inoperative, and energizes a pulse generator 57 and timing devices 58, 59. The pulse generator supplies pulses to the scaling units 50, 51 and, as each is filled, it operates a corresponding relay 70, 71 which, by its contacts 66, 67, cuts off the supply of pulses and, by its contacts 62, 63, stops operation of the respective timing device 58, 59. The timing devices then indicate the counts registered by the scaling units 50, 51 at the time when the scaling unit 49 was filled. This arrangement may also be modified so that the fixed frequency pulses step the scaling units 50, 51 back to zero condition.
