Disclosed is the use of heterocyclic compounds of the formula (I) R -X-L, in which: L stands for a cyclic carbamate group, lactone oxy group or lactam group, X stands for an oxygen-containing group of one of the formulae (a), (b), (c), (d), (e) or (f), in which A represents a bridging group; and R indicates an organic group or an L group, as activators for inorganic peroxy compounds, in particular as cold bleach activators or optical brighteners in washing, cleaning and bleaching agents and in disinfectants.

Hydroxamic acids and hydroxamic acid ethers have formulae (I) and (II), in which Z and Z stand for the groups -NH-OY, -NR or Z in (I) or the residue Z in (II) being -NH-OY or -NR -OY; R stands for C1-18-alkyl; X stands for hydrogen, alkaline metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium; Y stands for hydrogen, alkaline metal, ammonium, substituted ammonium or C1-18-alkyl; and L stands for a C1-100 bridging member which may also bear oxygen- and nitrogen-function groups. Excepted is the N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)-2-aminoacethydroxamic acid. The compounds (I) and (II) are suitable as complexing agents for alkaline earth and heavy metal ions, in particular as builders or bleaching agent stabilizers in washing and cleaning products.

Described are polycondensation products obtained by condensing (a) butane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid, optionally mixed with hydroxycarboxylic acids or other carboxylic acids, with (b) polyhydroxy compounds selected from the group comprising mono-, oligo- and polysaccharides, reduced mono- and oligosaccharides and their amino derivatives, oxidized mono-, oligo- and polysaccharides, alkyl polyglycosides, polyvinyl alcohols and oligoglycerins with more than 2 glycerin units, or mixtures thereof, plus, optionally, (c) up to 20 mole %, relative to component a, of alkylene glycols, polyalkylene glycols or monohydric C4-C20 alcohols, in the ratio, by weight, of a:b from 50:1 to 0.5:1, the condensation products produced having a K-value of 8 to 100 (determined by the H. Fikent method in a 2 % by wt. aqueous solution at 25 °C and pH 7 on the Na salts of the condensation products). Esters are disclosed of citric acid or acetylcitric acid anhydride with compounds containing at least 3 OH groups selected in the group formed by polyglycerine, sucrocarboxylic acids, alkylglucosides, derivates of oligosaccharides, aminosorbit, aminodisorbit, glucosamine, triethanolamine and trishydroxyethyl-melamine, in which each OH group of the ester alcohol components is esterified in average with 0.15 to 1 molecule citric acid or acetylcitric acid anhydride. Also disclosed is the use of these citric acid esters as additives to phosphate-poor or phosphate-free washing and cleaning products.

Lacquers are disclosed, containing (i) a synthetic resin (A) which contains hydroxyl groups and α,β-unsaturated carbonyl groups or a mixture of such synthetic resins and/or (ii) a mixture of (a) a hydroxyl group-containing synthetic resin (B) or a mixture of such synthetic resins and (b) a cross-linking agent (C) which contains α,β-unsaturated carbonyl groups or a mixture of such cross-linking agents and (iii) a catalyst (D) that catalyzes the reaction of the hydroxyl groups with the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl groups or a mixture of such catalysts. The invention is characterized by the fact that the catalyst (D) is a Brönsted's acid.

A process is disclosed for preparing polymers with hydroxamic acid, hydroxamic acid ether and/or hydrazide groups in the side chain, by reacting (a) polymers which contain ester, amide, imide and/or acetal groups in the main chain and carboxyl, ester, imide, amide and/or anhydride groups and/or halogen as side chain, or a polysuccinimide with (b) hydroxylamine, hydroxylamine alkyl ethers with 1 to 18 C atoms in the alkyl group, N-monoalkylhydroxylamines with 1 to 18 C atoms in the alkyl group and/or in salts of said compounds and/or (c) hydrazine and/or hydrazine salts in an aqueous medium or alcohols at pH values of at least 7. Also disclosed is the use of the thus obtained modified polymers as additives to washing and cleaning agents, as complexing agents for alkaline earth and heavy metal ions, as pigment dispersants and as scale inhibitors.
