Class 59 A steam turbine 3 for driving a sugarcane or other mill 1 is mounted on a platform 4 at the same level as the mill platform 2 and drives the mill through gearing including a gear box 7 the direction of drive through which is downward. An electric motor 11 is operatively connectible to the gear box for reversing the direction of rotation of the mill. The steam turbine may be replaced by an electric motor.
