Method and apparatus to enhance intermodal containers (10) for transport of vehicles wherein multiple longitudinal rails (14) on container walls support movable and removable transverse cargo pallets (16) having foot members (18) which are articulatably connected to the pallets. Cargo, preferably an automobile fixed to front and rear pallets, is loaded by inserting each pallet's feet onto appropriate rail(s) at door opening, then sliding to stowage spot, the rail selection determining height and tilt. Stowage of any mix of automobiles in intermodal containers is optimized by double-decking, half-decking, double half-decking, mirror-imaging, and envelope intervention. On back haul, pallets serve other cargo as restraints, hangers, pallets, or dunnage deck supports, or they are stowed out of the way. Method and apparatus permit automated load planning and container stuffing and make containerized shipment of large volumes of automobiles cost competitive with current methods.

Procédé et installation améliorant les conteneurs intermodaux (10) pour le tansport de véhicules, dans lesquels des rails longitudinaux multiples (14) sur les parois du conteneur supportent des palettes transversales mobiles et amovibles (16) présentant des pieds (18) reliés de manière articulée aux palettes. La marchandise à transporter, de préférence un véhicule automobile fixé sur des palettes avant et arrière, est chargée en introduisant chaque pied des palettes dans les rails appropriés près de l'ouverture de la porte, et en faisant ensuite coulisser les palettes jusqu'à l'endroit de stockage, la sélection du rail déterminant la hauteur et l'inclinaison. Le stockage de plusieurs modèles de véhicules dans des conteneurs intermodaux est optimisée par double-pontage, demi-pontage, double demi-pontage, rangement spéculaire et intervention sur l'enveloppe. Lors du voyage de retour, les palettes font office d'organes de retenue, de suspension ou de support de pont de calage pour la cargaison, ou alors elles sont rangées à un endroit où elles ne gênent pas. Ce procédé et cette installation permettent l'automatisation de la planification du chargement et du remplissage du conteneur et rendent concurrentielle, par rapport aux méthodes habituelles, l'expédition par conteneur de grandes quantités de véhicules.
