Abstract: A tufted carpet or other tufted pile fabric comprises a base of flat cross-section closely woven warps and wefts 10, 11 pierced by the pile yarns 13 and a relatively heavy backing 15 preferably of woven or knitted circular-section yarns secured to the base by rubber latex 16 or other adhesive. The yarns 10, 11 may comprise strips of kraft paper or, preferably, ribbons of monofilament synthetic resin e.g. of polypropylene, polythene, nylon or of polyester or polyacrylic resin longitudinally oriented by stretching such that when pierced by the tufting needles the material splits but does not elongate. The backing 15 may comprise kraft paper yarns or multifilament and/or monofilament polypropylene, nylon or other synthetic yarns. The pile yarns 13 may also be of preferably bulked synthetic resin.

Abstract: The weft of a woven base for tufted pile fabrics consists of a plurality of synthetic filaments joined together by a weak link so that when pierced by a needle the filaments separate without themselves being cut or broken. They may consist of a cluster of fine filaments adhered together, or of a number of monofils lying side-by-side and sintered together, or of an extrusion in the form of side-by-side monofils each joined to the next by a thin web. The warp may be of flat monofil or may be the same as the weft.
