Abstract:
A facing element for a reinforced soil structure has first and second adjoining chamber. A polymeric strip to be secured to the facing element is circumflected about a non-metallic member, and the member and a portion of the circumflected strip are inserted into the first chamber and moved laterally into the second chamber where they are retained in wedged-engagement. The first chamber is sealed to prevent removal of the rod.
Abstract:
A forestry cutting, mulching and clearing attachment for a hydraulic excavator that is used for clearing sloped grounds, ditches, and culverts. The device includes two mating jaws which are substantially rectangular in shape and include a plurality of mating cutting surfaces. The clearing apparatus is designed to cut standing trees and brush using both longitudinally and laterally oriented cutting surfaces. In the preferred embodiment, the first jaw includes a curved blade and a pair of cutting blocks, while the second jaw includes a pair of curved blades and a cutting block. Each jaw has a pair of fixedly attached brackets which are used to pivotally mount the jaws to the boom structure of the hydraulic excavator. The jaws have a mutual pivoting point attached to the central boom of the excavator, and peripheral pivoting points movably attached to the control rams of the hydraulic cylinders. The hydraulic cylinders may be actuated to open and close the jaws in order to cut the debris into mulch. The jaws may be used to gather and remove the resulting mulch from drainage ditches by simply partially closing the jaws using enough force to grasp the mulch but not enough force to further cut the mulch.
Abstract:
A random box closing apparatus of the type having a box closing and sealing station having a sealing head which is movable upwardly and downwardly to accomodate boxes of different heights and having a main conveyor adjustable for box width, and having a box sensing station for sensing the height of the box, and having a sensing conveyor adjustable for box width and for further sensing the width of the box, and thereby controlling the spacing of the main conveyor in the box closing and sealing station, in which the apparatus is characterized by height sensing means operable to sense the combined height both of the box and the upper closure flaps extending thereabove when open, and delivering a combined height signal responsive thereto, and movable carriage means upon which said height sensing means is movable upwardly and downwardly, at the box sensing station, and having signal communication means connecting between the height sensing means and the power operated movement means, whereby to move the box sealing head vertically responsive to such combined height signal and there being movement transmission means extending between the sealing head, and a portion of the sensing conveyor at the box sensing station and connecting with the height sensing means whereby to move the height sensing means vertically in response to a change in box width, and also moving the height sensing means vertically in response to vertical movement of the sealing head.

Abstract:
A system an method for determining to select frames from a video sequence that have high visual appeal and can be coded at high quality when frame rates of coded video drop to such low levels that perceptual sensations of moving video are lost. A metric is derived from a candidate input frame, and such metric is used to determine whether to increase or decrease a weight accorded to the candidate input frame. In an embodiment, the metric may be the auto-exposure data associated with the candidate input frame.
Abstract:
Some embodiments provide a method for initiating a video conference using a first mobile device. The method presents, during an audio call through a wireless communication network with a second device, a selectable user-interface (UI) item on the first mobile device for switching from the audio call to the video conference. The method receives a selection of the selectable UI item. The method initiates the video conference without terminating the audio call. The method terminates the audio call before allowing the first and second devices to present audio and video data exchanged through the video conference.
Abstract:
The invention relates to pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and toxicology, and more specifically to methods of identifying and predicting inter-patient differences in response to drugs in order to achieve superior efficacy and safety in selected patient populations. It further related to the genetic basis of inter-patient variation in response to therapy, including drug therapy, and to methods for determining and exploiting such differences to improve medical outcomes.
Abstract:
A method is provided for receiving a data frame in an ultrawide bandwidth network. In this method, a device receives an ultrawide bandwidth signal containing a data frame. The device then performs an acquisition operation during a first preamble in the data frame, and identifies a marker after the first preamble that indicates that the first preamble has ended. After this, the device performs a signal processing operation during a second preamble in the data frame. After the training, the device then receives a header in the data frame, and then receives a payload in the data frame. By having a marker between the two preambles, this method provides a receiving device with critical information regarding the timing of the preamble section of a frame.
