Abstract: A catheter for balloon angioplasty includes a flexible shaft (12) defining a hollow passage (18), the shaft having first (14) and second (16) ends. A core means (20) is movably and removably mounted within the hollow passage, the core means having first and second ends adjacent the first and second ends of the shaft. The core means has a first flexible portion (26) adjacent the first end and a second flexible portion (28) of greater flexibility adjacent the second end. The core means may also have an enlarged terminal knob (30) at the second end. A flexible guide wire (32) may be fixed to the second end of either the shaft or the core means. The catheter may be inserted into a vascular tree. After removal of the core means, the core means may be replaced by an exchange wire, an angioscope, a laser fiber, or a rotatable wire. Also, when the core means is replaced by an exchange wire, the shaft may then be removed and replaced by either a different balloon angioplasty catheter or a perfusion catheter.

Abstract: An angioplasty catheter (10) having a tube (12) with a balloon-like member (14) connected to the tube (12) at the distal end (20) thereof and a guidewire (16) removably insertable within the tube (12) and capable of engaging the end of the catheter within the vicinity of the balloon-like member (14), the guidewire (16) and the tube (12) being in close-fitting relationship such that there is insufficient space around the guidewire (16) to allow inflation or deflation of the balloon-like member (14) in a reasonable amount of time with the inserted guidewire (16).

Abstract: Un cathéter pour angioplastie à ballon comprend un arbre flexible (12) définissant un passage creux (18), l'arbre présentant une première (14) extrémité et une deuxième (16) extrémité. Une tige centrale (20) est montée de manière mobile et amovible à l'intérieur du passage creux; les première et deuxième extrémités de la tige sont adjacentes aux première et deuxième extrémités de l'arbre. La tige centrale possède une première partie flexible (26) adjacente à la première extrémité et une deuxième partie (28) présentant une plus grande flexibilité, adjacente à la deuxième extrémité. Un câble flexible de guidage (32) peut se fixer sur la deuxième extrémité de l'arbre ou de la tige centrale. Le cathéter peut être introduit dans une arborescence vasculaire. Après son extraction, la tige centrale peut être remplacée par un câble d'échange, un angioscope, une fibre pour rayon laser, ou un câble rotatif. De même, lorsque la tige centrale est remplacée par un câble d'échange, l'arbre peut être extrait et remplacé soit par un autre cathéter pour angioplastie à ballon soit par un cathéter de perfusion.
