Abstract: A centrifuge tube has an elongated hollow vessel, and the vessel has a closed bottom end. A portion of the inner surface of the vessel is roughened near the closed bottom end, e.g., by micropitting the portion, such that the solid pellet or precipitate that is separated from the supernatant of a specimen during centrifuging is retained on the roughened portion when the supernatant is drawn out of the tube subsequent to centrifuging. If desired, a sticky substance can be deposited on the roughened portion of the inner surface to further facilitate retention of the pellet on the roughened portion when the supernatant is drawn out of the tube subsequent to centrifuging.

The wells include secondary wells (74, 84) having reduced volume and volume limiting plugs (20). Abstract: An apparatus (10) for dispensing liquid in conjunction with an array of pipette tips (14), where each pipette tip (36) includes a socket portion (42). The liquid dispensing apparatus (10) includes tubes (25), each including a barrel (28) and a lower end (33), and a nozzle (34), each nozzle (34) having a shoulder (68) and a mouth (44) configured of appropriate diameter to enter into the socket portion (42) of each pipette tip (36), and form a liquid-tight seal therewith. A bottom plate (24) includes a number of through-holes (72) through which each of the nozzles passes (34). The through holes (72) are of larger diameter than the nozzles (34) so that limited lateral movement is allowed. A second embodiment (100) is convertible, so that separation of upper (73) and lower boundaries (75) may be decreased such that the upper boundary (73) contacts the shoulders (68) of said nozzles (34), to hold the nozzles (34) in fixed position, for use with pipette tip arrays (96) which are not bound together in fixed spatial relation to each other, but which are themselves allowed limited lateral movement. Both embodiments (10, 100) may further include a shucker plate (50) such that when the shucker plate (50) is made to travel away from the bottom plate (24) by an ejection mechanism (85), the pipette tips (36, 97) are pushed off of the nozzle mouths (44).

Abstract: A multi-well container (10) is provided in which a greater number of wells may exist than heretofore possible while still maintaining a standard multi-well plate tube array format and footprint. The multi-well container (10) is comprised of a rectangular array of tubes (12) in standard tube format held together by an integrally fashioned plate portion (16). The tubes (12) are subdivided by partitions or septa (14) which extend the height of the tubes (12). Each septum (14) may constitute a single wall or may be comprised of any number of fins (32) which are integral with internal tube surfaces (28). In a symmetrical design with four such fins (32), the fins (32) radiate at angular intervals of 90 degrees from a common central axis (34) with which all four fins (32) are integral. Thus, the septa (14) serve to compartmentalize each tube (12) into symmetrical quadrants of four smaller wells or sub-tubes (30). The preferred embodiment is directed toward usage in conjunction with PCR thermal cyclers, but the multi-well container (10) and the elements as are embodied therein are generally applicable to any laboratory procedure where multiple samples must be treated, evaluated, or stored.

Abstract: A bath shaker (10) is provided for agitating liquid baths. The bath shaker (10) incorporates a "flexible parallelogram" mode of movement wherein a bath shelf (20) is attached to and supported by two, parallel opposing flexible arms (112). The volume of the plenum (85) is adjustable to a minimum whereby the mouths (32) of the vials (28) are sealed by the ceiling (190) of the gas-tight seal (197), which is optionally an upper gasket (90). Also disclosed is a plenum enclosure (182) for multiple simultaneous synthesis used in conjunction with vials (28), which includes the upper frame assembly (180) and lower frame assembly (181) and the gas-tight seal (197), as well as a gasket vial holder (185) to be used in the plenum enclosure (182).

Abstract: A multi-well synthesis and filtration apparatus (10) for performing multiple, simultaneous chemical reactions, workups and purifications on a micro scale. The apparatus (10) includes a deep-well synthesis block (12) having a plurality of wells (24) fitted with filter disks (48), an upper cover (14), a lower cover (16) and a pair of sheet gaskets (18 and 20). The sheet gaskets (18 and 20) are interposed between the upper and lower covers (14 and 16) to seal inlet portions (38) and outlet spouts (40) of the wells (24). Apertures (70) in the upper cover (14) provide that the sheet gasket (18) may be punctured for introduction of materials and/or maintenance of an inert atmosphere. The design is such that either the synthesis block (12) alone, or the block (12) as covered, is dimensionally of a size that provides for a footprint that is the same as a standard microplate.
