Abstract: A melt blowing die for extruding filaments of a polymer by a suitable configured air supply system to provide critical influencing and control over the molecular orientation, crystallinity and crystal orientation in high speed fiber spin line applications. Control of the both the magnitude and location of the applied shearing force is provided, through the design characteristics of the air supply system and, in particular, the attenuation of the filament through an attenuation slot; in one form in conjunction with the introduction of the air flow to the filament in a parallel flow caused by a Coanda bend in a second form in conjunction with a properly designed internal channel.

Abstract: A process of making a non-lofted fiber veil (14) for the production of insulation (e.g., thermal, for blown-in applications), having X, Y and Z vector directions of the fibers includes melt blowing a polymer to form molten fibers having molecules oriented along the length (or X vector direction) of the fibers, placing the fibers on a roller (12) spinning at a rate to provide additional orientation of the molecules of the fibers into the Y vector direction, and cooling the fibers while on the roller (12) to form the non-lofted fiber veil (14).

Abstract: A non-woven mat of fibrous thermoplastic insulation (52, 54, 56) is produced by melt blowing recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The PET is melted, pressurized and extruded from an extrusion head (5) into substantially continuous fibers (20) that are subjected to turbulent high velocity air (41) that attenuates the fibers (C). The fibers (22) are then collected on a collection device (39) building up a non-woven mat. The collection device (39) is spaced from the extrusion device (5) forming a flight path for the fibers (20) that is sufficiently long that the fibers split apart under the force of the high velocity air (41), fibrillating into a plurality of very fine fibrils (22) of under 15 microns in diameter. These fibrils (22) are analogous to goose down and greatly enhance the loft and R value of the mat.
