Abstract: The water-cooled smoking pipe is designed to economise on the use of tobacco and esp. avoid unwanted release of smoke during lighting up. The tobacco (Tabak) is placed at the bottom of a cylindrical container 11 cm high with a vertical axis. A second, larger dia. container, also 11 cm high contains water. (Wasser). Both containers are closed at the top by stoppers (Stopfen). The bottom of the container for the tobacco is heated by a small burner or lamp (Teelicht). Air is drawn in through an inlet tube 13 cm long, which may have a stopper at the top and extends through the container stopper to just above the tobacco. Smoke is drawn off from the top of the tobacco container through a tube which passes into the water container. The smoke is bubbled through the water and the cooled smoke is drawn off from the top of the container via a tube which goes to the smoker's mouth.
