    Abstract: 1,155,756. Filter; ion exchange. SPARKLER MFG. CO. 6 Sept., 1966 [15 April, 1966], No. 39767/66. Headings BID and BIJ. A filter 1 whose inlet 14 screws into a domestic water tap comprises a housing whose two parts 3, 4 screw together to urge a compression plate 20 on to a filter element 19 10 seal the element against part 3. Part 4 has lugs 12 to assist assembly, and a sealing ring 11 is forced upwards in its trapezoidal-seotion, annular groove by the water pressure to exclude water from the threads 30, 33. The element 19 may comprise a layer 25 of cellulose fibres, diatomaceous earth, active carbon and powdered silver bonded to layer 26 of cellulose fibres and diatomaceous earth only. An alternative element comprises powdered ion exchange resin (R.T.M.-Amberlite) and cellulose fibre. A unit (27) containing Amberlite beads may be attached to filter 1 downstream (Fig. 4, not shown). Parts 3, 4 and plate 20 may be polyethylene, polypropylene or ethyl cellulose. The element 19 is supported by a porous plate 6.

    Abstract: 1,086,746. Plate filter. SPARKLER MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 24, 1964 [May 11 1964], No. 47770/64. Heading B1D. Means for both reciprocably moving washing conduit 50 within filter vessel 10 or opening the filter by moving tank 12 relative to the cover 14 comprises an hydraulic ram 58 activated within cylinder 60, which cylinder is attached to tank 12. Alternatively a rack and pinion arrangement may be used with the rack corresponding to cylinder 60. For opening the filter vessel 12, the ram 58 is held firm to the supporting structure 16 by a pin through holes 66 and 68, bolts 46 and lugs 48 are unlatched and the ram is operated to move cylinder 60 and thus tank 12 to the left. Hydraulic ram 58 and cylinder may alternatively be located on cover 14 or structure 16 with releasable securing means disposed between conduit 50 or ram 58 and the tank 12. Also tank 12 may be fixed to the frame 16 with cover 14 movable. Filter cake deposited on filter plates 42 is removed by sprays 86 and 88 (Fig. 4) which cut the cake in half vertically, and sprays from nozzles 76 and 78 and divergent nozzles 20 (Fig. 3) which wash the cake away as the conduit 50 reciprocates. The plates 42 may be vibrated by device 72 during washing and they may comprise parallel plates of metal filtering means suported on a frame.

A filter comprises a housing containing a plurality of inward-flow woven filter bags 14, each supported by an internal flat hollow member consisting of two perforate metal plates mounted on a filtrate conduit 11 common to all the bags, the bags being shaken relative to their internal supports by flexible strips 17, of aluminium, stainless steel or polyethylene terephthalate, which are threaded through loops 18 on the bags. Strips 17 may be U shaped (Fig. 4, not shown) or pairs of straight strips on opposite sides, and are bolted to bars 28, welded to cross bars 32. As shown, each of two pneumatic cylinders 23, 24 shakes one half of each bag, but the cylinders could each shake a different group of bags. Cylinder rods 25 operate through seals 26, 27. The housing (Fig. 1 not shown) has a valve-controlled air vent 8, a lower inlet (7) which also serves to drain the slurry after a filtering run and a hinged lower cover (5) which is then opened for removal of filter cake when the bags are shaken. Fig. 6, not shown, illustrates how loops 18 may be replaced by a single tunnel, and Fig. 7, not shown illustrates bag shaking by a motor-operated cam shaft.

A filter plate comprises stainless steel screens 12 and 14 mounted on annular frame 10, an outlet header 38 mounted over radial holes in the frame with portions 46 overlapping the frame, and bars 48 which clamp the screens to the frame near the header. The bars may be riveted or bolted to the frame, the screen may be held in grooves 18 and 20 in the frame by splines 24 and 26, and the header may be welded or bolted to the frame and be sealed to manifold 42.
