Abstract:
A retractable hose extension for a vacuum having an expandable hose (1) within a containment structure (2), a first coupling (9) at the first end (12) of the hose (1) and in the first end (8) of the containment structure (2) for connecting the hose (1) to a vacuum, a valve (15) at the second end (13) of the hose (1), and either a door (21) or other releasable retention device (21) for the hose (1). Preferably, the valve (15) is an iris valve. Two fixed embodiments and one portable embodiment exist. The first fixed embodiment is inserted within a wall (24). The second fixed embodiment is rotatably attached to a tube (29) contained within or running below a ceiling (30) and extending from a vacuum system.

Abstract:
A method and device for measuring trace levels of particles in an air sample is described. A device operating in a gradiometer configuration with two cavities built from a monolithic structure and utilizing a single probe laser, provides common mode subtraction of acoustic, vibrational, laser intensity and other noise sources, which allows sensitivity more closely approaching the quantum limit. Differential measurements between the two cavities occur simultaneously, which reduces errors due to cavity drift. Absorptive gradiometry can therefore provide noise immune detection for trace gasses, including broad linewidth absorbers where frequency-noise immune schemes are not practical. Differential measurements can be used for background subtraction, sensing vapor plume gradients and determining vapor plume propagation direction.

Abstract:
Micromirrors are provided which are not rectangular in order to minimize light diffraction along a direction of switching and into the acceptance cone of collection optics (115). A light source (114) is placed orthogonal to rows and columns of an array (94) though not orthogonal to any substantial portion of the sides of the micromirrors in the array. The micromirrors of the present invention result in an improved contrast ratio and the light source position results in a more compact system. The micromirrors have the ability to pivot in opposite direction to on and off positions where the movement to the on position is greater than the movement to the off position.
Abstract:
A method for producing a thermoplastic film-substrate resistive thick film heating element is described, involving the melt bonding of an electrically insulating, optionally filled high temperature thermoplastic film to a substrate. This thick film heating element includes an optionally filled high temperature thermoplastic film-substrate onto which is deposited at least a resistive thick film, and is capable of operating over a wide range of power densities for consumer and industrial heating element applications.
Abstract:
An information retrieval and analysis system for numeric data which provides high precision and recall for numeric search and uses a methodology for determining contextualization of the extracted data. The capabilities include extracting, parsing, and contextualizing numeric data including both a numeric value and an accompanying unit. This system facilitates the organization of largely unstructured numeric data into an inverted index and other database formats. An information retrieval system which enables the exploration and refinement of an extracted numeric data set defined by a search input that may be precise or initially vague. This system also facilitates analyzing and portraying numeric data graphically, creating knowledge by combining data from multiple sources, extracting correlations between seemingly disparate variables, and recognizing numeric data trends. This system uses local natural language processing, mathematical analysis, and expert-based scientific heuristics to score the numeric and contextual relevancy of the data to the query parameters.
