Abstract: Solid gelled oils are prepared by heating non-drying vegetable oils with an oxygen-containing gas at 140 DEG to 200 DEG C. and subsequently working the product with or without solvents. A stream of air is passed through castor, blown cotton seed or olive oil, heated at 155 DEG C. The stiff-jelly thus produced is passed through a mill together with a solvent such as toluol, benzene, acetone, ethyl acetate, turpentine to form a homogeneous dispersion or solution. A paint is formed by mixing the solution thus obtained with a cellulose derivative such as nitro-cellulose, together with camphor, ester gum or other resins, pigments, such as carbon black drying oils and solvents such as methylated spirits, ethylene glycol ethylether, cyclohexanol, or mineral oils. The paint may be applied to metal or wood surfaces, to a fabric to form leather cloth.ALSO:Solid gelled oils suitable for use in making plastic compositions, are made by heating nondrying vegetable oils such as castor oil, blown cotton seed oil or olive oil, with an oxygen-containing gas at 140 DEG to 200 DEG C. and subsequently working the product for example in a roller mill. Solvents such as turpentine, benzene, acetone, toluol or ethyl acetate may be incorporated during the milling process. The products thus obtained may be mixed with cellulose derivatives such as nitro-cellulose, ester gum or other resin, camphor, pigments such as carbon black and drying oils. Solvents such as methylated spirits, ethylene glycol ethyl ether, cyclohexanol and mineral oil may be added.

Abstract: Benzyl cellulose is incorporated with a plasticizer comprising one or more aromatic ethers of a polyhydric alcohol such as glycerol and vegetable fillers such as cork dust, sawdust, &c. are added. The product is used with or without a fabric backing for floor coverings. A suitable aromatic ether is dicresylin (glycerol dicresyl ether). Minor proportions of other plasticizers may also be employed; polychlornaphthalenes and chlorinated diphenyls are mentioned in this connection. A resin such as ester gum may also be added to the composition. Specification 358,393 is referred to.
