The oligomerization of linear olefins having 10 to 24 carbon atoms to form oligomers suitable for use as synthetic lubricants proceeds to give good yields of dimers and trimers when the oligomerization catalyst is one obtained by depositing a phosphorus-containing acid on a montmorillonite clay.

Already-prepared polyureas and polyurethanes, such as scrap from RIM processes, can be recycled by dissolving them in polyoxyalkyleneamines and reacted with polyisocyanates. The solutions of polyureas and polyurethanes in polyoxyalkylene amines can be reacted with polyisocyanates to form polyureas in RIM, spray, foam or thermoplastic materials or in paints.

High yields of synthetic lubricant base stocks with high viscosities and high viscosity indices can be obtained by oligomerizing linear olefins having 10 to 24 carbon atoms in the presence of up to 10 weight % of poly(isobutylene). The oligomerization catalysts are acidic calcium montmorillonite clays having a moisture content of up to 20 weight %, a residual acidity of 3 to 30 mg KOH/g, and a surface area of 300 m²/g or greater.
