Abstract: The retractable conduit of the invention comprises a sheet of memory-set polyester (4) formed as a conduit. To manufacture the memory-set strip, the polyester sheet (4) is wound into the desired retracted, e.g. coiled, position, heated and cooled. After this process the sheet of polyester will automatically assume the retracted position. In one embodiment, suitable as a splashblock, the distal end (47) of the polyester sheet (46) is wider than the end (48) attachable to a downspout (49). In another embodiment the polyester sheet (4) is sheathed in an elongated polyethylene tube (2), to form a retractable hose. In a preferred embodiment, the distal end of the hose is supported on a spool (14) which will roll along the ground as the hose is wound and unwound to further ensure that the hose retracts properly. The tube can also be provided with holes (18) to act as a sprinkler if desired.

Abstract: A flexible, retractable assembly for use as a door, space divider, covering or the like which comprises a sheet (20) such as Mylar TM polyester film having a permanent memory set to roll up on itself or otherwise retract automatically into a coil (42), accordion, or other compact configuration. The assembly is adapted to be stored on one side of an opening and then guided across the opening to fully or partially cover the opening. The permanent memory set of the sheet permits it to retract at least partially under its own force to eliminate or minimize the need for separate rewinding apparatus. The sheet may substitute for a variety of standard products including entryway doors, closet, cabinet and shower doors, screen doors and windows, room dividers, machinery guards and covers for various items such as fluorescent light fixtures. The sheet may be combined with decorative finishes including a tambour composite structure providing aesthetic and functional advantages.

Abstract: An anti-theft alarm is provided, for a portable device such as a laptop computer. An embodiment of the anti-theft alarm comprises three main components: a uniquely coded tag for attachment to the bottom of the device, a pad upon which the device is placed, for sensing the tag, and an electrically powered control module. The module is connected to the pad. The control module is able to determine if the tag is still in contact with the pad - if not an alarm sounds immediately. The module can also determine if the electrical power has been disconnected and if the module has been moved (using a motion sensor). If there is no power and the module has been moved, an alarm sounds immediately. The alarm can be disabled with a key switch.

Abstract: Cable, wire, optical fibre and other elongated objects may be encased in a tube which has a longitudinal axis and is made from an elongated strip of oriented crystalline thermoplastic polymer film, wherein the strip is memory-set into a split tubular shape. The split may be parallel to the longitudinal axis or follow a helical path along the tube. Preferably, the strip is memory-set so portions adjacent its longitudinal edges overlap or are adapted to be interlocked. After forming into tubular form, the split tube may be splayed open and wound up on a roll for easy transportation; the memoryset tube will re-form when the strip is unwound from the roll.
