Abstract: 4567. Wishart, T. G. Feb. 22. Spray carburettors.-In a carburettor having a choke - tube axially movable relatively to the spraying-member and a needle fuel-valve movable axially to an extent proportionate to the movement of the choke-tube, the choke tube 7 is actuated by the arm 22 of a bell-crank lever, and the fuel-valve 13 is actuated by the arm 21 of the lever, the ratio of the movement of the choke-tube to that of the fuel-valve being variable. The fuel-valve is pressed upwards by a spring 14a and is adapted to be depressed by a crank-arm 15 mounted on a shaft 16, on the other end of which is a crankarm 18. On the shaft 16 is pivoted a slotted arm 19 adjustably carrying a roller 20 engaged by the arm 21 of the bell-crank lever, and also carrying an adjustable screw 19 engaging the lever 18 ; by adjusting the position of the roller in the slotted arm, the ratio of the movement of the choke-tube to that of the fuel-valve is varied. The fuelspraying member consists of two parts 2 , 2 with a central fuel-passage 3 and radial passages 4 leading to the jets 5 ; the fuel-valve has flutes 14 at its lower end.

Abstract: 8146. Stewart, D., and Wishart, T. April 20. Switches.-Relates to electrically-actuated centrifugal machines of the self-balancing type. To facilitate the starting and stopping of the machine, the motor is controlled by a switch, Fig. 3, in which; upon turning the arm m in one direction, current is first directed through the armature c, one set of the coils h of the field magnets, resistances, and the other set of magnet coils, in series ; the resistances are gradually cut out ; then one set of the field-magnet coils is cut out ; next the two sets of magnets are placed in parallel for the steady running of the machine, and the resistance cut out. By moving the arm back beyond the central position, the current in the armature is reversed, which quickly brings the machine to rest.
