    Abstract: PURPOSE: A heat insulating material, resulting from binding inorganic and organic materials to heat resistance Al2O3-SiO2-based ceramic fibers, is provided which has low density and high strength at high temperature by positioning inorganic binder in the contact point between fibers selectively. CONSTITUTION: The heat insulating material comprising Al2O3-SiO2-based ceramic fiber doped with Zr, and inorganic and organic binders is manufactured by the following steps: preparing ceramic fiber having a length of 100-900micrometer, keeping less than 1wt.% of fined fiber having larger than 50micrometer of particle diameter and 120-350km/m3 of density, which contains 35-47% of SiO2, 30-50wt.% of Al2O3 and 15-23% of ZrO2; adding 3-10wt.%(based on the fiber) of inorganic binder such as colloidal SiO2 or colloidal Al2O3, and 1.7-3.3wt.% of organic binder such as methyl cellulose or polyacryl amide-based polymer; forming in vacuum; drying and thermal-treating at 1000-1400deg.C.
