Abstract: A optical fiber preform is produced by the stages of depositing glass particles on a rotating starting member, heating in an atmosphare of chlorine and helium under conditions of temp. and pressure such that hydroxyl groups are eliminated and the preform is vitrefied. The appts. comprises a reactor made of pure quartz, a heater to accomodate the reactor, a sensor monitoring pressure and controling the inflow or outflow of gases to maintain constant pressure, and inflow and outflow tube valves.
