    Abstract: PURPOSE: A composition containing an Angelica dahurica extract is provided to rapidly reduce drug dependence and to be used as a pharmaceutical composition and a health functional food for preventing and treating drug addiction and the withdrawal symptom. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating drug addiction and the withdrawal symptom contains an Angelica dahurica extract as an active ingredient. The extract is a crude Angelica dahurica extract or an Angelica dahurica fraction. The crude extract is prepared using water, low alcohol of C1-C4, or a mixture thereof. The fraction includes a non-polar solvent soluble extract which is dissolved in hexane, chloroform, diethyl acetate, methylene chloride or 17 subfractions(ADE-22-13-1 to ADE-22-13-17) which are prepared from subfractions(ADE-22-13) using a silica gel column. The subfraction is prepared from the non-polar solvent soluble extract. The drug includes cocaine, methamphetamine, alcohol, nicotine, or morphine. A health functional food for preventing and treating drug addiction and the withdrawal symptom contains the extract as an active ingredient.
