    Abstract: PURPOSE: A microorganism suitable for fermenting silage having a low sugar content and a method for producing silage using the same are provided. The microorganism can grow at low sugar concentration and produce lots of lactic acid and is thus effectively used as an inoculant for producing silage. CONSTITUTION: The microorganism Lactobacillus plantarum NLRI-101 (KFCC-11101) which is suitable for fermenting silage having a low sugar content is isolated by the steps of: inserting high quality silage extract into an MRS broth containing 0.02% of sodium azide(NaN2) and incubating them at 37 deg. C for 24 hours; spreading the fermented culture of silage extract on MRS agar medium containing 0.02% of sodium azide and incubating them at 37 deg. C for 48 hours; and selecting colonies and identifying the strain as Lactobacillus plantarum NLRI-101 (KFCC-1101).
