Abstract: A molybdenum or tungsten thiocarbonate additive compsn. of formula (I) fluids is prepared. In (I), R1 and R2 are each H or hydrocarbyl such that R1 and/or R2 is H for at least 1 thiocarbamate gp. and hydrocarbyl for at least another; M is Mo or W; X is O or S; b is 1 or more; a is 1 or more (w.r.t. oxidn. state of M); c is 1 or more (w.r.t. oxidn. state of M); and d is O or 1 or more (w.r.t. oxidn. state of M). (I) is useful as an additive for lubricating oils, automatic transmission fluids, and has improved anti-wear antioxidant, extreme pressure and friction modifying porperties for internal combustion engines.
